Hehe, no problem. It does seem to run in the family, I got my scalp issues from my mother. And it does tend to show up in childhood so it's possible you've had it a long time. You can actually have it as an infant, it's called cradle cap! If you had that as an infant, your scalp is prone to overgrowth. I sort of pieced this information together myself after years of dealing with my scalp issues and research as well as studying medicine. I just want to point out that if you're not experiencing any symptoms like overly greasy scalp, itch and flakes the overgrowth isn't that bad, so it's nothing to worry about. Glad you found it helpful! It should continue at this rate as long as you continue killing off those bad guys lol.
See, we have an excuse to bleach now lol π
As for the henna. It may or may not be strong enough to help with that. It depends on how much is in the product ( how much of it is in one application) and if it has gone through any refinement processes and the quality of it. It sounds like good quality henna to me but it is an extract so I don't know if the extraction process would alter that effect or not. It may just be a matter of quantity as to why it wouldn't work. It also isn't being activated. Henna needs to be activated with an acid in order to work and then it needs to cook a little until it's at optimal strength and ready to go. How well it treats fungus without being activated I do not know. It may do nothing at all! It may help a little.
I remember sometimes doing "henna glosses" which is diluting the henna with conditioner. I would not get the same relief from the glosses as I would get with straight henna. My case is more severe though so it wasn't strong enough for me. There would be much much less henna in that product than with a gloss. My guess would be that it isn't enough to be killing much of anything if at all, but that's just a guess.
Very cool to know, thanks so much Icebear!
So just a vinegar would do? π
Yes vinegar is pretty strong. It's enough to give me relief for about a day or two if I'm lucky, so it's powerful stuff. Apple cider vinegar balances the pH of the hair. White vinegar is more acidic than the hair. So acv would be the better choice.
The only reason I do not use acv anymore is because it does alter the color of your hair, as with white vinegar. Both lighten it. Apple lightens and adds a reddish cast and white acts more like what a bleach would do.
As long as you use acv sparingly and dilute it a lot you should be OK to use it. Same goes for white. But in my experience, over time, eventually, it does lighten your hair. And acv will add brassy tones.
For this reason, I use other things like bleaching and coconut oil. Honestly for someone who doesn't have symptoms like I do, regular coconut oil scalp treatments should be enough to kill off a minor overgrowth.
***Also, if you take some coconut oil internally, it's working from the inside out which is also helping the problem. It has amazing health benefits. I take it internally, 1tbsp everyday and my dog gets tsp too! lol
Thanks so much for all the information, really! I indeed did have cradle cap, and funny, my sister didn't and her hair has always grown like weeds. My scalp used to be very oily growing up, so I'd wash it everyday, then use stronger, more drying shampoos, which just ended up making my scalp produce more oil....a vicious cycle. I was doing the same with my face too. I eased off of everything for a week or two and within a few weeks to a month, my scalp/hair was normal. Now, I only need to shampoo every7-10 days, the 7 day mark is when it starts getting noticeably oily usually.
I cannot believe it was something so simple! I know I sound like a broken record but it really does make perfect sense. I'm excited to know this now, I can't wait to tell my clients, friends and family about it π
I've been taking it internally as well too! Also, I've been oil pulling, which is where you take oil (preferable coconut oil because of it's properties) adn you swish it around your mouth for 20 minutes a day. It helps get all the gunk out of your mouth and gets stuck into the oil. I've been doing it for a little over a month now and my mouth does feel a lot cleaner, and I rarely get bad breath anymore. Of course I still brush and floss, but the oil pulling really has made a big difference in my oral hygeine!
Hehe, my pleasure. It's simple yes, but it's not exactly common knowledge and this is years of personal research condensed somewhat crudely lol.
Yes I do oil pulling too! I have chronic health problems so I'm trying to cure or at least help myself and oil pulling is something I do as part of my health care routine.
I cook with it too π
Ha ha ha, impulsive me, I stopped on the way home from work and got regular ol' vinegar! I'll get the white (or apple cider) variety next time to help keep up the lightening process.
Always knew vinegar supposedly cleans the hair (and what I heard, clarifies build-up - don't know if that's true), and then learnt that it helps calm the cuticle after bleaching (thanks, Katie, for that knowledge), and now it helps with hair growth! It will definitely become a staple in my shower!
Ya it's awesome stuff. It cleanses, closes the cuticle, restores pH balance, and is anti-fungal/anti-bacterial. It would only make your hair grow faster if you had fungal scalp growth that impeded the natural growth rate of your hair, so no guarantees on that part of it.
I think white vinegar does everything acv does except for restoring pH balance, so I don't recommend it for frequent use but it might be fine if you did. You can always use the white vinegar for cleaning. That's what I use to clean the linoleum floors lol. You can use it to kill lice too! Just don't do what i did and accidentally spill some and bleach your brown carpet *gun*
*edit: I though you said you picked up the white instead of the acv
This makes me want to do a vinegar rinse next time I was my hair, I've been avoiding it because it seems so much effort π
It really isn't all that much effort at all! I have a bottle already ready to go with half vinegar and half water, and I just dump some on my head when I'm all done shampooing + conditioning. I usually run a conditioner again through real quick after doing a vinegar rinse , like Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut, just so my hair smells like coconut and there's no chance of it smelling vinegar-y lol.
I am the speedy shower type so every minute extra feels like an eternity for me lol π
I would have a lot more time in my day if I took speedy showers.
Haha π It had ups and down, I never really had a bath in the last 10~ years of my life so I manage to shower fully in about 5-7 minutes if I wash my hair... multitasking like crazy π
Woah, I don't even start doing anything for the first 5 min lol
Oh, showers take me forever. I don't even start doing anything either for at least the first 5 minutes lol
I am trying to do this at the moment and it is driving me nuts.
It gets to a certain length, I think enough is enough and go an get it chopped.
I would love to have long hair again and currently am trying to grow out a short style meaning that my hair is longer at the back than the front, and is kind of a style that I can not wear down.
Length wises it varies from jaw length at the sides to just about nape of neck/top of shoulders at the back.
Then we have the xmas season upon us with work parties and I find myself considering a trip to the hairdresser again π
