Hair dye on hair product?

I'm a guy.  I've never had my hair dyed in a salon but I have always wondered about this.  What I think they do in a salon is to first dye your hair, then wash it, then cut it.  Right?

What I have always wondered is how the products people use in their hair, like hair spray, gels, waxes and whatnots affect the coloring process.  Before you wash it these things can be built up on your hair pretty good.

Don't those things interfere with getting a consistent dying process?

Inquiring minds want to know.  Thanks for quenching my curiosity.... *cheers*

On their own, they don't really affect the dying process at all.

Dyes used most in salons, that you don't wash the hair first, are able to eat through virtually anything that's built up on the hair. The peroxide used is what does this. In fact, having dirty hair is better as it's some protection. So even a really heavy build up won't make any difference.

The way they can have a difference to the kinds of dyes most of on this board is this. Build up of product requires use of a harsh shampoo. The kind of dyes we use are easily washed out with harsher shampoos (but even permanent colours can have some of the colour washed out). We use what are called direct dyes. These leave a stain on the outside of the hair, designed to wash off eventually, and a small amount of colour deposited under the cuticle. Harsher shampoos lift the cuticle and so the colour washes out from there, but they also strip the stain faster.

I hope that makes sense!
