hair disaster

Hello there.

I have been going to a salon for hair colouring.  This has been fine until my friend said my hair fades too fast when I wash it so I mentioned this to the hairdresser and he suggested doing it a shade darker.  He did and the colour seems to not fade.  The colour by the way is dark brown.

However, the last few days my hair has been in very poor condition.  It is not curly but I have thick straight hair and it has become very dry and coarse and fly away, and the ends of my hair has become thin.

I put it down to the fact that my hair hasn't been cut for a while so with a good cut, it should look nice.  I have medium length hair.  After work today I went to the salon to see my usual hairdresser and he started to cut my hair.  He did not cut much off which was fine, and previously I had shown him a photo of a style that I wanted my hair to look like and he said yes he could do it.  It is a layered style to just above the shoulders and at the time I had quite short layers and my hairdresser said the layers would have to grow longer, like the pic I showed him.  As my hair grew, he cut it in more or less the style of the photo.  However, when I went today to have it cut, I asked him why my hair had become so dry and coarse and fly away and he said oh well air conditioning can do it or too much heat.    He cut my hair and to be honest, it wasnt so obvious until I got home.  It looks ten times worse and he has simply hacked it and the ends of my hair are all whispy.  In fact, my hair has never looked or felt so bad.  I paid a fair amount of money for the haircut and I am thinking of complaining, but who do I complain to?  The man who did it was the owner so there is nobody above him at the salon I can go to.  I could go to the salon tomorrow and say to the female receptionist... "look at my hair, would you like to look like this"?  In all honesty I do not know any woman who would want to look as I do with my hair as it is.  I am wondering whether something in the colouring products has made my hair go like this.  It only happened when the hairdresser darkened the shade.  My hair has never been glossy or silky because I am of mixed origin and have african roots, but my hair has never been this bad before.  I need an intensive course of deep conditioning treatment and a good cut from another hairdresser at another salon in order to rectify this disaster.  I am embarrassed to face people at work because I told them I was getting a haircut and a haircut should make a woman feel like a million dollars and in fact I look like I have been dragged through a bush.  The only solution is to cut all my hair off and start again from scratch which would be a shame when I have spent so long trying to grow it.  I had a good hairdresser at the same salon but she moved away and then she recommended the person I have now.  I do not have any health problems to make my hair look and feel so horrid.    It would be different if I had my hair cut by a junior stylist, but for goodness sake, I had my hair done by the owner himself and he is the most senior stylist there.  What made it worse was that when I went to have my hair washed prior to the cut, the girl did not even put an apron round me.  I had to ask for one.

I am not going back to the salon again but do I have the right to make a complaint?

Any time someone is dissatisfied with a service they have the right to make a complaint, even if it is to the owner. I wouldn't suggest complaining to the receptionist since s/he had nothing to do with the service. Obviously you might have to speak to them initially but since the person who cut your hair is the owner it is up to him to remedy the situation. Tell the person as clearly and factually as possible what happened and why you are dissatisfied. A good owner will offer you a free service (and possibly free products) to correct the problem or refund you. I suspect your hair has been overprocessed and is no longer taking color properly. Also it sounds like maybe he razor cut your ends. I'd suggest using deep conditioning treatments weekly and sticking to co-washing and getting the ends trimmed. If there are overprocessed sections they could use a protein treatment to help 'fill in' any porous sections so that they take color better in the future. Also be sure that the colorist doesn't continue to process those sections; make sure they are using deposit-only color. Best of luck.

I could be wrong, but do some dark colours have peroxidey type things in? Was it a semi or a permanent colour?
Sounds like a bad hair stylist. Definitely go back about it, try to be very clear about what is wrong with it and what you would like them to do about it. I don't know whether they'll give you some/any money back, but they should at least fix it...
