Hi, my name is FalseMaria, and I'm a guy (That's why I'm False Maria ;)) looking for advice about hair dyeing. I've coloured my hair in the past, but usually with the help of a girlfriend or hairstylist. I've used purple and vivid reds. The brands I've used previously are Directions as well as Paintbox. I'm leaning towards using Pravana as my product this time around because of how long it lasts.
Though I have many questions about all this, first I'd like to get some suggestions as to what colours might suit me well. I'm a visual person, so I tend to need to see it in order to be able to judge it, so my colour choice might be the colour I love, but might look horrible on me. *ill*
I've attached a picture of me from several (eight?) years ago. Other than a couple extra pounds, I look pretty much the same today. My hairstyle is also roughly the same, though I am growing it out currently for the first time ever. Not sure how long it will get in the end, but I'm aiming for a more androgynous/feminine style. Choppy pixie cut comes to mind, but really not sure yet.
So what vivid colour(s) would you guys recommend for me?
Are you looking to stay within the purple/red family or open to branch out? I personally love turquoise on just about anyone, a deep turquoise I would think. But I think with your skin coloring you could get away with most colors and they would look nice, but because your fair I tend to like jewel tones on fair skin, I think it pops a bit more, but its ultimately your decision. Good Luck!!
Red and purples are still on my radar, but I was hoping for some pastels perhaps. I'm also interested in doing multi-colour dyeing once I get the hang of things, which is why I'm looking for as many suggestions as possible.
I think you could pull off pastels, the only problem with pastels is the maintenance, its a lot of bleaching and from what I've heard on this forum, they can be a pain in the rear, but if your up for the maintenance level then I say go for it, you'll never know what looks good unless you try it. There are also smartphone apps where you can load in a picture of yourself and try different hair colors/styles out without taking the dive to color your hair. I've personally never used them but it seems like it might work for you since you said your a visual person. Another option would be to try a temporary color change, I myself have been experimenting with colored hairsprays, since I can't have crazy colors with my job, and I found out I love bubblegum pink on myself (and they rinse out in 1 wash, so no commitment) , so I think there are plenty of ways for you to try multiple colors on yourself before you make your final decision.
You could always go and try on some wigs somewhere! Failing that hold up some clothes to your face in different colours, you should be able to tell from that what suits you and what doesn't.
I agree with Emmer that I think jewel colours (think bright but rich and with depth) would look great on you, deep red, emerald green or a deep teal.
Pastel wise I think lilac could look really nice on you, but you look very dark haired naturally so you could have a big job on your hands getting light enough for pastels and you would get some very noticible regrowth (however I think dark roots can look great with pastels).
Just judging by the photo I think you should probably avoid yellows, golds, brassy blondes but you might be able to do peach or rose gold.
Would "Wild Orchid" or "Violet" count as a Jewel colour? I'd probably want to do a deep, rich colour for the main colour, then something lighter for some highlights/streaks. So either "Magenta" or "Pink" to complement the main colour. I'll attach the Pravana colour range so you can see.
Yeah, I've been blonde before a long time ago. When seeing pictures, I can definitely see that it was not the colour for me.
I love the violet color! I am a little bias because purple is my favorite color but even still I think it is flattering on all skin types! Depending on how much time you want to spend on the process, I think the violet as your all over base with highlights of wild orchid would be more subtle but if you want more bold I like the violet base with the pink highlights, I've never personally used pravana, but I hear they are very good and the colors last pretty well.
Pravana, like all ranges of direct dye, has its good and not so good shades.
I suggest starting by lightening your base. The level of blonde you achieve will affect the choice of colours available to you.
If you can get an even platinum, level 10, you can have any colour you want.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Next up will be deciding when to bleach/color. Right now I am growing my hair out, and I'm about at two months past that picture as far as growth goes. Looks shaggy and awkward, so either I trim it and clean it up a bit to colour now, or just wait it out for a while.
I think the purples and pinks would be great colours for you! (Wicked Pixie, correct me if I'm wrong but he won't need a really light base for these colours unless he's diluting them pastel?)
I don't suit blonde either! I think you would look pretty cool platinum or silver blonde though, just not golden or caramel blondes.
*thx*
So quick Pravana Vivids question; I can't seem to find a definitive answer on how it's used. Some say don't dare use it full strength, and some say it is mixed with toner. It goes back and forth, and can't seem to find the real answer. I have a newly renovated bathroom, so last thing I want to do is ruin the grout and stuff.
What is the best way to use Pravana?
It depends on the shade. Some, like Violet, are extremely strongly pigmented and can be diluted a lot before it has any impact on the final colour. Others, like Pink, are not particularly well pigmented to begin with.
Diluting the strong colours helps to prevent rub off and bleeding, and will make the long lasting shades slightly easier to remove later
And when diluting, you use toner?
I use white conditioner. Pravana have a clear dye that you can use to dilute, but it is an unnecessary expense IME
Yeah, just cheap, white, silicone-free conditioner is what you need for diluting your dye. The "pastelizers" and "clear" dyes are just a marketing ploy π
