I am unfortunately horrid at cutting my own hair so I have no choice but to go to a hair salon every now and then. The hairstylist asked usual questions, like what brand of shampoo and conditioner I use. I made the mistake of telling her I often conditioner-only wash and she proceeded to (loudly!) lecture and scold me about the negative results of not cleaning my hair with shampoo, and she seemed to continue on about it for a long time. It was probably only a couple minutes but to me it was so humiliating. The way she was talking, to anyone near by, It would've sounded like I was just unclean and disgusting.
Of course I will continue to use conditioner only and save shampoo for occasionally.
This is the same hairstylist coincidentally who tried to explain to me their hair colour was not at all damaging because it doesn't contain ammonia. I guess I need to find a new hairstylist...... π
That's awful, I'm sorry you were made to feel bad. I try not to talk to hairdressers about my hair routines for this reason. I hope you manage to find a better one!
What a horrible woman π you should complain to the salon manager, that's no way to treat a customer.
I agree, that woman is awful! It is so dissapointing that some people are so critical of alternate ways of doing things. I Cowash my hair and I am not a dirty person. It is so much better for my dry, fine, super porus curly hair. I don't use shampoo at all unless I am fading a color, and I only Cowash about 3 times a week. By now you would think that a professional hairdresser would be knowledgeable about alternative methods especially with the push of mainstream hair care putting out sulfate, silicone, and paraben free lines. That woman should be ashamed of herself for making you feel embarassed.
I would complain to the salon owner.
I have to say, there is a place for being critical of alternative ways of doing things. The alternative can be wrong and damaging and it's important for professionals to question what people are doing. Sadly in the UK you don't even have to have ever trained to be a hairdresser to do it. There's no licences, only a voluntary register. So, not all hairdressers are going to be all that savvy. And to lecture you like that is stupid and not called for. I can't remember if you're in the UK or not, but I would guess that hairdressers don't always keep up on the latest ideas if they don't have to and aren't interested.
However, what she thinks not using shampoo is going to do intrigues me. Can you bare repeating it here?
When I tell hairdressers something about my haircare routine and they don't agree, I just smile and say, well we'll have to agree to disagree. What we do might not all be right, but I don't think CO washing is hurting.
I think it's ridiculous hairdressers could be so clueless! You'd think if that's you're job you'd need and want to be well informed in alternative methods of doing things, but it seems like they literally just stick to what they were taught. I'm planning on doing a hairdressing apprenticeship from September. My goal is to never end up as one of those snobby hairdressers who thing they know it all! :p
If I were you I'd also complain to the salon owner.
Thanks everyone, and yes I'm in the UK. I'm trying to remember what she said, but it was so embarrassing I wasn't able to take it all in. Somehow or another not using shampoo was going to make my hair dry and damaged. It was something along the lines of if my hair isn't clean the ingredients from the conditioners won't work their way inside my hair. The sad thing is I have been taking good care of my hair for the past year and it's healthier and shinier than it's ever been in ages.
That would only be true if you were using silicone loaded products. She's just parroting half correct stuff that she's heard from other people, I really wouldn't worry about it.
A lot of us co wash and none of us are dirty freaks (as far as I know :p)

That might be true if you used products containing silicone, but if you know about CO-washing then no doubt you know to avoid cones π
Still no excuse for treating you like scum though.

You should tell her that conditioner is actually better at removing oil from hair without drying out the scalp. Some people need to educate themselves better if they want to be lecturing people.
My hairdresser was very intrigued by conditioner washing and told me once I had the best-condition bleached hair that he's ever seen. I'm so glad I go to someone open-minded (who just rolls his eyes and complains about staining his hands whenever I turn up with a new colour :D)
I would never return to her, she doesn't deserve your business. Scolding you is pretty unprofessional.
A lot of us on here only co-wash with no issues.
I hardly ever use shampoo now, my hair hates it. Plus i only wash it a couple of times a month in the winter (I can't bear having wet hair hanging around in the cold weather) but because I don't use shampoo it just doesn't get dirty like it used to. My natural oils are all absorbed into my hair, I can't remember the last time my hair got really greasy.
I would definitely complain and find a better stylist. Not only was she rude she was also ignorant. Vote with your feet and go elsewhere.
