Boyfriend is currently Pravana silver (with CC peacock blue streaks) and has decided his next colour will be black. One extreme to the other *sigh* Now I know nothing about going dark from light - anything I need to be aware of before he "makes" me do this to him? Should I put a red on first? He thinks he wants to use a permanent colour, after all that time I spent getting him light enough for silver from his natural dark brown...

It depends what kind of black he wants. You might be able to forgo the red if he wants a serious blue black.

I think he'd suit blue black better than flat black. I shall persuade.
