Yup, you do know the answer! Afraid not.

BUT

A colour remover (not stripper) should do the job for you and remove the colour you have at the moment and give you a fresh base to work from. But remember that all permanent colours contain peroxide, often stronger stuff than you'd use in a bleach bath!

As Tabitha says what you need is a colour remover such as colour B4 and your hair will likely have been lightened a bit by using the permanent dyes anyway. Dyes aren't designed to lift dye so if you tried lightening it from it's current state it would likely go very uneven.

Thanks everyone, that's what I was afraid of.  I know after using colour remover you should wait a week before doing a bleach bath right?  What do people use to hide their ugly colour while waiting to do a bleach bath?  Direct dyes seem to deposit so much colour for me.  I'm thinking maybe a toner would be better?  I havent bought toner before, I'm assuming Sally's has it though.  After using colour remover my hair will be an orangy ugly colour which I'll need to cover straight away!
After the bleach bath I'll need to do the same thing. I'm not trying to go platinum blonde or anything, just lighter, like a medium to dark blonde.
In the meantime I've used a detox shampoo I had and it's already lightened my hair a bit, I may just try some of the other techniques for lightening and maybe I can skip the Coloir B4 and go straight to a bleach bath....

Could you maybe use a really, really diluted adore dye as your in between colour?

Be careful even if the permanent dye starts to look faded, I've had some awful disasters trying to go both lighter and darker over existing permanent colours, tiger stripes look better on tigers than on me!
