I have had red hair for the last 2 years and I really do love it. My work a cool with it and I'm known for it where I work - it comes in very handy when trying to direct people to find me! However, I'm now finding I need to top up the crazy colour every week and a half. It doesn't help that I'm now going to the gym a lot and washing it more but I can't not wash it as its so greasy when I work out. Does anyone have any suggestions of other colours that might suit me of a different less high maintenance red? My partner loves me red but I really don't know what to do! I should mention too my hair goes so blonde in the sun so it's even harder to keep red in summer! Thanks x to explain the photos attached, the one of me in my stripe jacket is with it freshly dyed and the other 2 pics are as it fades.
A workout produces sweat, not grease, so have you tried just rinsing it out with water after the gym?
Have you tried other methods for minimising fade? (Washing less often, using less/no/SLS-free shampoo? Cover it to protect from sun-fade?)
What dye do you use?
Hi, I've tried just doing a water wash but when I leave it to dry it goes like straw and static so I can't do much with it. I've changed to sulphate free shampoo which I do find a lot better than my old stuff (used to use Aussie). I use majicontrast when I have my roots done every 6-7 weeks but I between I use crazy colour on it xx fire red
Try doing a conditioner only wash, using conditioner as shampoo.
You'd suit most colours, so the dye world is your oyster 🙂
Also, maybe switch to Special Effects reds if you want to stay red. They're a lot better than Crazy Colour.
I second the suggestion of switching to a different red - Special Effects last ages and are very highly pigmented, but are about twice the price of crazy colour. However, having said that, you'd probably save money in the long run anyway if you're dyeing less often. Crazy colour dyes are one of the worst in my opinion, they don't seem to be very pigmented and wash out super fast (on my hair anyway, some people get on really well with them). If you really can't afford to switch to SFX dyes, then maybe try Adore. They are also very long-lasting and well pigmented, and a cheaper option than SFX, although for me, I still prefer SFX, as it has just that little bit more pigment and staying power than Adore (again, my own personal opinion, on my own hair).
Also, when you're having your roots done with the majicontrast, are you doing just your roots, or are you then going over the whole head with the majicontrast each time? If you're going over the whole head, you're getting cumulative damage from the repeated applications of peroxide which can damage the cuticle, and potentially prevent semi dyes from holding in your hair. If this is what you're doing, I'd suggest using the majicontrast on just your roots from now on, and then going over the whole thing with just a semipermanent red. You don't need to lift your lengths any more to get a bright red, so any peroxide you're putting on the lengths is just adding damage each time unnecessarily.
Sulphate free shampoo is a good start, and I also echo the call to switch to Special Effects. A good cone-free conditioner is helpful if you're sulphate-free, as cones can build up and make your hair feel and look greasy and lank.
I work out five days a week and I only need to redo my hair every 6-8 weeks (sometimes I stretch it to 10 if I'm feeling super-lazy, but by that point it's definitely not red any more!). I tend to wash my hair every 2-3 days.
Edited because I just read your reply on another thread-sorry! I realise your hairdresser just does your roots?
I'm a bit concerned a hairdresser is using majicontrast on your scalp to be honest, I know the salon I worked with completely refused as its against the instructions and they wouldn't be covered.
You can buy SFX online - it's a bit rare to find it in our shops. I know it seems a bit of a pain but I promise it would be worth it. You could ask the hairdresser to just lighten your roots and apply the SFX all over. This should last you a good couple of weeks rather than the 1-2 weeks you deal with.
