Hi there, I'm new to the forum and was hoping to get some help! After half a year's struggle to get grey hair (didn't lighten my hair enough previously), I've finally achieved it using Nirvel's ArtX Grey dye after reading recommendations from this forum. Unfortunately, I dyed my hair when my roots had already grown out, and made the rookie mistake of dyeing my roots as well.
This has resulted in my hair being an ashy brown at the roots (a good 3-4 inches) and grey everywhere else which sadly is just not the look I'm going for. I don't want to bleach my roots and dye them grey to match the rest of my hair as I really don't think I'd do a good job. I'd much rather dye my roots black. However, I read a long time ago that dyeing your hair black is a huge no-no, as it would make it hard to change in future (which I intend to do).
I've considered using a dark grey dye at the roots to create sort of an ombre effect but from previous experiences, grey doesn't latch onto any colour other than light blonde. If this is an option, I was wondering if any of you had any recommendations? I was also wondering if I could use a semi-permanent black dye instead (perhaps La Riche) to counter the problem that black dyes present since it should wash out?
Many thanks for your help and I'm excited to join this wonderful community!
I think the main things to consider here are that if you do dye your roots black then as it grows you will either end up with black further and further down the lengths until your hair is a black to grey ombre, and eventually just black or you will need to remove the black and lighten your hair enough for the grey (in which case it would be kinder to just lighten it now and save it having the additional processing of the black dye and the colour remover, not to mention the fact that it could stain).
If you were to use a semi permanent black on the roots you would encounter the issues of it not sticking well to virgin hair and washing out quickly, as well as it potentially washing down the hair shaft and muddying the grey.
It's not really that grey doesn't latch on to colours other than light blonde, it's more a case that direct dyes are not opaque so the colour you get with them is always determined by the tones in the base colour and with grey this can end up giving mostly dull brownish tones if the base isn't light enough. Though as I say, direct dyes in general have trouble sticking to hair that has not been processed at all.
Some people pre-soften their hair in preparation for direct dyes by using just peroxide, but I have not had any success personally with that method!
I'm not sure what to advise you for the best (other than that you may well be best lightening your roots if you do mean to keep the grey for a while) but I hope this advice at least helps inform whatever you decide!
