"Dyeing" for advice

I apologize for the sad pun in the title.

Hey guys. I've been searching for some stuff on the internet and for the life of me, can't find answers. So, I've decided to turn to you all! Quite surprised that I haven't found this forum for so long.

I'm an 18 year old dude about to head off to college in around 20 days. So, since this will be a "fresh start" and all that, I've decided to dye my hair! Woo! How adventurous!

But, I have had issues with my hair for a long time. 2 years ago I went through this very unhealthy phase of crash-dieting + exercise and I gave myself TE (Telogen Effluvium). So my hair started to thin and all that, but it's slowly getting better now. Yay for recovery! xD

So, here's the deal. I'm going to dye my hair slightly brownish-red? I have black hair at the moment which hasn't been dyed before. My question is, what do I do after I dye my hair? I'm super paranoid about my scalp and hair right now, so I'd like to know:

How long before I can oil my hair?

Will I be able to use olive/coconut oil on my dyed hair without affecting the color?

Do I absolutely need a color-shampoo thingy or would a shampoo that's free from SLS etc etc suffice?

Thank you so much for all the help, in advance. I appreciate it greatly.  *hugs*

You can use oil straight after.

"Will I be able to use olive/coconut oil on my dyed hair without affecting the color?"

Yes. Though, I'm not 100% convinced olive oil doesn't stain very pale hair, it's definitely fine for anything darker than blonde. And probably fine for blonde too, I just had an odd issue a while ago, but it was probably something else.

Absolutely DON'T need a colour shampoo. They're actually way worse. Even better, read up on conditioner only washing on the forum (also known as CO washing).

Added to that, you can use coconut oil while you bleach/dye your hair (not with direct dyes though, like manic painic etc). Put it on at least an hour before and then leave it on while you bleach/dye. It helps protect the hair and scalp.

Thank you so so much. Your reply helped me out entirely! I'll stay away from olive oil just in-case. And yes, I will use coconut oil a few hours before I dye my hair.

Also, CO Washing seems very interesting! I've noticed that my hair looked and felt much softer when I skipped shampoo. I'll definitely give it a go! πŸ˜€

Thank so much, once again. *thx*

Don't skip the olive oil! Honestly, for the colour you're aiming for it will be fine πŸ™‚

Definitely didn't! I colored it a few hours ago and it's all washed and stuff now. It isn't really the burgundy color I wanted it to be. It's still very very black and that's to be expected I guess. I don't want to bleach my hair so I didn't...

Question: After a month or so, can I re-dye my hair and would it make a difference? I used Garnier Color Intensity Deep Burgundy PERMANENT hair color.

Those box colors are only for use over virgin hair, and color can't lift color, so no - it would just give you damage for no reason. Box dyes can be just as damaging as bleach. Can you post a picture of your hair now and what color you want to achieve?

My hair is "virgin" hair... well it was before I dyed it.. obviously XD. This is how it looks right now :

I'm only dyeing the front-section of my hair, (forgot to mention, I think).

This is the color I want :

My hair does show as reddish in sunlight etc. Can I use another L'oreal hilift dye over this to get the shade I want? Or should I remove the current color first?

Exactly. Virgin hair has not been processed. Your hair has been processed. It is no longer virgin hair. Again, you cannot lighten a dye with more dye. Don't use the hi-lift unless you are OK with very damaged hair that will have difficulty holding color. I'd suggest using a color remover and seeing how much your natural color has been lifted by the dye. If it is at least an orange you can use a semi-permanent (direct) dye over it to get that color. If you need to lighten your hair you can do a bleach bath in a month. You will get more vivid, longer-lasting, and less damaging results this way.
