deep conditioning question

so... i was planning to wash my hair last night, so yesterday afternoon, i slathered my hair in some thick moisturizing conditioner, and pulled it into a bun to deep condition for a while.  i'm starting to suspect that i might be using a bit too much protein in my hair, so i thought this would be a great idea.

but, in a surprising turn of events, when it came time to wash out, i started filling the bath tub as i got ready, and the water was BROWN.

like, EXTREMELY brown.  gross!!!  i was livid, omg.  i really wanted that bath!!  (in case you're wondering, i have a service call into the water company today, don't worry!)

so, i obviously didn't get to take my bath, which means i didn't get to wash the conditioner out of my hair.

aaaand here's the question-- how long is too long to keep this stuff in my hair?  i would really like to avoid even rinsing off in this gross water, but if i'm going to cause damage by leaving the conditioner in for much longer, i will.  any thoughts?

I'm not an expert, but I would say a deep conditioner kept on for 'too long' is going to do no harm whatsoever.  If your hair is the type that can experience too much protein, then that might be something to be concerned with.  But if it's deep conditioning, I'd say it's not a worry.

I don't experience breakage from 'too much protein', but I do occasionally work a normal non-protein, silicone-free conditioner through my hair after washing it (normally just the lengths) and leave it in till my next wash, which is a good few days.  So I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Just - good luck with the water issue, that sounds a bit of a pain! :-*

im honestly not sure if the split ends ive been dealing with are from too much protein-- it's just another theory.  i figured it would be an easy one to test out.  but, it also might be that my shears aren't sharp enough when i do search and destroy sessions... and it might just be that my hair is just really long and splits happen!

but i agree with you in that i think this shouldn't be too big of a deal.  it's not keratin conditioner, after all, it's just supposed to be hydrating.  figured i'd check, though!  i feel like i learn something new every day on this site!

It should be fine.  The worst that would happen is it would go limp when you wash it out, but it's nothing a shampoo or two can't fix.

And eaugh about your water--hope that gets sorted out quickly!

It should be totally fine. The owrst that will happen is your hair may be over conditioned and feel limp and kinda grimy, almost sticky in a way, which can easily be fixed with a shampoo. Sorry to hear about your water! Thank God you didn't have bleach on your hair or something! Ever since @spooki wrote about having something on her hair and the water went out while it was on, I've been keeping a few gallon sized water jugs in our pantry JUST in case. I hope your water gets sorted out soon!

"eaugh", well done Intemp, a good double entendre for talking about "eau"!

That had to have been intentional. πŸ˜€
