Right.....i need a plan, a hair plan if you will.  This is all new to me so be kind. I have only heard the terms co-wash, sulphate free, silicone free in the last two weeks!!!

I’ve recently had a brown to blonde ombre effect in my (painfully fine and straight and limp) hair and got a bit bored and I piled a load of manic panic cleo rose into the ends – I love it.  Pic attached hopefully.

BUT.....I’ve been reading this forum and searched how to not only maintain my colour for longer, but also how to co-wash, which shampoos to buy and  how to re-dye my hair properly (wash or no wash, condition or no condition) and I gotta tell ya....I’m confused!!!!

So I thought if I put it down in writing, it might help me!  Let me know if this sounds about right, or if there are any tweaks you would make......here’s the plan;

Re-dying

I’m going to clean my hair with a clarifying shampoo right before I dye it
I’m gonna let it dry
I’m gonna add my colour of choice (likely manic panic cleo rose for now)
I’m gonna leave that bad boy in overnight with a shower cap on (hubby is gonna love me)
Then I’ll rinse it out with no shampoo and do a cool vinegar rinse on it

Does that sound right?

Should I condition with a silicone free conditioner at any point in this process??

Maintaining

Current routine

I currently wash 1-2 times a week with swartzkopf girls 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner which is sulphate, silicone and PEG free (but i don’t feel like my hair is nice and clean and shiny looking or has a lot of bounce)
Dry shampoo in between
I’m also heat styling my hair too much so must stop that

Suggested routine

• Potentially co-washing with a silicone free conditioner once/twice a week using cool water
• Then do a ‘normal’ sulphate free shampoo and conditioner every once in a while just to clean the hair properly
• Try not to heat style but if i do,
• Still use dry shampoo

How does that sound? What are your current colour maintenance programs!?!?

So question – I get dandruff and I’ve stopped using head and shoulders because of the hair dye issue. It seemed ok for a few weeks, but I’m noticing it’s coming back.

So what should I do?.....

• should i use head and shoulders before I use the clarifying shampoo (as above) and before i re-dye my hair?
• Should I use a nourishing leave in conditioner?
• If i switch to a co-wash routine, would that make my hair and scalp more healthy anyway and I won’t have the problem?
• Any other suggestions? I’ve been reading about coconut oil, but not sure how all that works and when I should use it.

Sorry about the long post and I know these answers are scattered throughout the forum, but I’ve really got my knickers in a twist and I don’t know what’s the right approach anymore!

Firstly, there is no right or wrong approach. Everyone's hair is different so it is about finding the right routine and products for you.
Your re-dying plan sounds spot on. If you want to condition I would do it after rinsing the colour out but before the vinegar rinse.
As for your regular routine, it depends what you are trying to achieve. Is your hair dry, or damaged?
You can get your hair fully clean with CO washing, but it takes a while to fully adapt. No reason to not use some sulfate free shampoo if it suits your hair and scalp though, it is really a personal choice.
Have you had the dandruff medically diagnosed? lots of things can cause a flaky scalp. I would personally avoid Head and shoulders as it contains so many chemicals. Often it can make things worse, it will dry my scalp out and make it flaky, so kind of defeats the object. (I only use it to fade colour occasionally, i don't actually have dandruff)

I'm prone to dandruff (there's an underlying cause but I can't remember the name of it just now) and I've found that once my hair adapted to co washing my scalp has been much happier and I've had a far less flaky scalp.

This may not be the case for you but I would suggest giving co washing a while to see if your scalp adjusts before giving in and using shampoo again.
