Boo Hoo...Allergic to Dyes...having to fade :(

After getting my hair just the way I wanted it, I am having to give up on dyes. I can't take the itchy, rashy, blistery, red skin any more  :'(

After a pretty bad allergy flare up, I've decided my skin won't get used to the dye after all! So, after using Directions Cerise, Violet and Plum, I am having to let them fade out....and as I had been using different shampoos to preserve the colours, I have gone back to using The Body Shop shampoo (Rain Forest, no colour/preservatives/SLS/silicones/etc), so far the colour is different after every wash!

I loved the purple/pink and had so many compliments on it, but, weirdly, I am still getting compliments on my currently rainbow/green fadey hair!

I had bleached it, the roots were pale blonde, the lengths stained from using Live Colours, and would not get past dark gingery orange. I now have a couple of inches of natural brown roots (with grey), pink/lilac round my face and then various shades of green with some brown streaks and the area that was stained the worst and was ginger is now going light coppery blonde???

I have no idea how it will end up, but I'm going to have to live with it as I am allergic to most of the fading treatments too!! I am doing overnight coconut oil treatments every week, these don't seem to fade it much, but my hair needs the conditioning after Aussie Miracle Moist dried it out...

Anyway, my skin feels much better, but I was wondering how long it might take for the colours to fade out without fading treatments???? (I'll try and get a photo tomorrow)

Oh man, that sucks! >:(

Do you just wash with Rain Forest or leave it in for, idk, 30 minutes or so? A leave in could make a bigger change in fading. Do you know the specifics of your allergies? Perhaps we can find some fading technique that doesn't give you an allergic reaction?

I'm curious about the pics! ^^ It could be that the semi's kinda toned the ginger so it looks like a coppery blonde? I don't know, just guessing. I do wonder where the green comes from. Perhaps from the Plum as that has a blue base nowadays? Or the violet?

I never thought of leaving the shampoo in, lol! I wash as normal, but leave the conditioner for 10 minutes of so before rinsing, washing 3 times a week.
I think it maybe the actual colours I am allergic to, but I am also allergic to shampoos/detergents/perfumes/fish/shellfish/latex/oranges/pineapples/horses/headlice  *ill* and other insect bites/cholesterol tablets/sanitary products/mud face packs, and have hayfever and asthma....hence the not wanting to carry on using the Live Colours (Mystic/Cyber Purple).

The green is definitely from the Plum, the Cerise and Violet are fading nicely. Maybe the light copper is the Live Colours fading out (my hair was dark blonde naturally, but 6 years of Live Colours on top, so who knows!!)

I don't mind the green really, it matches my eyes!!!!

It might work to leave the shampoo in, under a showercap/cling film/plastic shopping bag for about thirty minutes or so (I personally just rinse it out when I had enough)
It is however quite drying so you need to condition it. But as I read it, that won't be problem. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Ah, I have the old plum which is less blue. Could also be the Live is fading out indeed and/or toned by the plum. Dunno, hairdye can react mysterious. *Hums the Twilight Zone tune*

I don't think Lush I Love Juicy will work as it does contain orange extract, I think. You could go to the nearby Lush or to the website to check them out and ask advice. At the local Lush they knew immediately why I wanted I Love Juicy. ๐Ÿ˜› In my experience, most bio/natural shampoos are quite the faders but I don't know whether they're all as wonderful as I Love Juicy

That's interesting that you're allergic to veggie dyes, but not permanent! I've never heard of that before, so annoying!

It's probably an obvious question and something you've already checked, but there's nothing in the shampoos that you were using that could have set this off? It's interesting that you're using a shampoo that most of us here would use for exactly the opposite and we don't use colour preserving shampoos, because they generally don't preserve the colour. Most I've looked at have SLS in and silicones.

Well, I am allergic to permanent dyes too, well not allergic as in major reaction, but as in itchy scalp, mild rash on face and neck after use....but then I wash the dye out super well and then go back to using the shampoo I know I am fine with and then I am fine after a couple of days.
But, when using the Directions, I have been using the Aussie Miracle Moist S&C (rubbish in my opinion) and John Frieda purple toning S&C as well as a Tesco deep conditioner with Argan oil. Oh, and an Aussie curl product. I've also used a couple of box bleaches and Colour B4 to strip out the Live Colours!
I've had a kind of ongoing reaction since February......entirely my own fault, self inflicted, but I was hoping it would settle...
I've also had a pretty bad reaction to latex ear plugs, blisters in the ears in not pleasant! and a bad reaction on my eyes to kitchen roll....swollen goey eyes, two sorts of drops, and they are nearly back to normal after a fortnight!
So, I don't know if it is a bit of everything, all the different brands of shampoos and conditioners, the latex, kitchen roll, etc...all piling up and making the reactions all run into one, or a true reaction to the Directions. I am hoping that if I cut out all the things I know I am reacting to, I might be able to go back to purple hair.......but, my worry is that everytime I wash my hair, more colour washes out and I have a reaction. I am already on a double dose of daily anti-histamines, which is not working as well as it was, but have an appointment with my GP tomorrow to discuss adding another type and getting a referral to an allergy clinic.....I am having more and more reactions lately to things I have been fine with in the past.
So, here are my pictures, I used Body Shop Banana S&C today, left each in for 5 minutes, and have a bit more natural coloured hair now, and less copper, more blonde on the stubborn streak!

It looks pretty awesome!

Oh dear, there are quite a lot that could have caused this all. I hope your GP and the allergy clinic will be able to tell you more.

Perhaps you know this, perhaps you don't: I have hay fever and all of the sudden I reacted on apples. I didn't took much notice and just didn't eat apples. Years later, I started to react on hazelnuts. Apparently, when you're allergic to silver breach pollen it's quite common to cross react on several foods and most likely apples and hazelnuts. I hadn't used anti-histamine for several years but now I have to if I want to eat hazelnuts (because really, nobody touches the hazelnuts). Anyway, this is besides the point I'm trying to make: I've learned that people with a latex allergy also can have cross reactions with several types of food.

Oh, I meant to say, when I got Directions on my ear and didn't realise for a few minutes, my ear was hot, red,  swollen and burning, and lasted a few hours even after rinsing  ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

I have always been allergic to pineapples and kiwis, and apparently, if you are allergic to latex then you should avoid those because you'll probably react to those too...and banana peel! so that is the same as you say with the hazlenuts, etc.....thankyou for replying ๐Ÿ™‚

GP says no more hair dye........but I did get two different antihistamines, a referral to the allergy clinic and a referral for an epi-pen.
Oh well, it was fun while it lasted, and at least I get to see the range of colours as they wash out, lol!!
A big thanks to everyone on this site, you have all been so helpful and friendly while I needed advice on trying to get back blonde and then going purple!!

We've had people here who are allergic do dip dyes before. Ones who have been seriously allergic too and could never do what you've been doing or their heads would have swollen to twice their normal size! Not that I'm saying your allergy isn't serious, as it is, but not as drastic maybe ๐Ÿ™‚

Since you've used so many different things on your hair in the past few months with shampoos, bleach, idk if you've done color removers or fading treatments, the dyes, etc, really that's a lot of different products, it could be any one of them or a combination, etc. What you could try doing (though I would leave out Directions since it obviously sounds like you're allergic to it!) with the supervision of a Dr, is trying to figure out which ones you're allergic to + seeing if the ingredients in those ones have similarities to narrow down exactly what in them you're allergic to. Like, instead of the usual allergy tests with different foods + common things + whatnot, do separate small patch tests with the products you've used. Idk if the Dr would be up for something like that lol, just an idea though! I'd hate for you have to eliminate unnatural colors altogether.

I know a couple people that agre growing their own 'dye garden' to make their own dyes. Usually though they seem to either be extremely permanent like henna/indigo, or they're faint + not so unnatural looking though...Idk there has to be something out there that you could use!
