Hi guys was wondering if anyone had advice about dyeing over bleached hair as I am having problems with it
Half of my hair has been bleached for two years and I have had several semi permanent colours on it while the other half has been black
I decided to dye it all ginger/orange with the olia 7.40 intense copper so bleached out the black and semi permanent blue.
The black went orange but since I dyed orange over it that half looks OK now
The blond half keeps washing out the copper dye after one use and going back to blond and it has been three weeks since it was last bleached.
Does anyone know if there is a way to keep the dye in as it is a permanent colour and shouldn't wash out that easily.
Thanks xx
One thing most permanent hairdyes actually warn about, but most people don’t notice or take seriously, is they aren’t meant to be used on bleached hair. Bleach damaged hair doesn’t hold the pigments in permanent hair dye well. Especially red. In fact, red, copper, orange, anything in that family of colours don’t last well and semi permanent dyes are actually better!
I would recommend using Adore dyes. They have a really good range of reds you can mix to find your perfect colour. By all means carry on using the olia on your roots, but only your roots. I’d also recommend adding some of your Adore dye to your conditioner as a top up each time you wash your hair.
I've found dyeing over bleached hair to be rather tricky. My lengths, which are over-processed and very porous, hardly hold any colour; the middle part which is bleached but not very damaged soaks it up like no tomorrow; and my natural roots takes dye moderately, but being another shade it comes out differently.
I'd definitely try some semi dyes - I haven't tried any myself but the Adore ones sound great. Other than that you could try babying your hair with protein treatments (be careful though as there is such a thing as too much of that) and coconut oil, to see if the improved condition makes it hold colour better.
If you look through the natural colours section of the photos section you’ll see a lot of examples of people getting beautiful coppers with Adore dyes.
Thanks for the advice about semi permanent dyes, I will definitely give them a try. 😀
