Black to dark auburn?

Apologies if this post is long & thanks in advance if you read it all πŸ™‚

Okay so my mum has dyed her hair jet black for years with all different brands of box dye & in my personal opinion it looks dull, boring & does nothing against her pale skin apart from wash her out.. I'm trying to convince her to go a dark auburn colour a bit like the pic I've attached but maybe slightly less red if I can help it, as I think it'll look so much nicer. My only question is where on earth do I start? I'm thinking use colour removers up to 3 times & see where that gets me, if it does anything at all tell her to deep condition & about a week later go back & either do a bleach bath or a full bleach depending on where the colour removers get us, then after that I'm stuck  ??? I know her hair isn't going to need to be white or exteremly light but I just need advice on how to get there, I'm also thinking she might have a lot of staining & we haven't got much room for chopping it off as she's got shoulder length hair. I'm not sure if she'll be happy dying with Semi's either but I'm trying my best to change her mind. I was thinking if she doesn't would a mid brown box dye do the trick & whack a semi red over it & she can top up as needed when it fades out? Any advice & tips would be great, thanks  ;D

Definitely go for the colour removers, you may actually need more than three tries. It should leave you with some shade of auburn/red at least, but it is likely to be uneven. You may need to add some pigment to even it up before using a box dye. I would go for a demi rather than a permanent, you can get red/brown demis, and then add more red with a direct dye as it fades.
