Best way to sleep with wet hair and avoid bird nest?

Natural hair is wavy and not puffy but if I sleep on it damp or wet it gets so disgusting.

How do I style my wet hair before bed to avoid this? I'm trying to avoid heat.

A lot of people braid their hair for sleep, and sleeping on silk or satin pillowcases can help keep hair smooth, even if you fidget in your sleep.

I've tried the twisted bun, as it's supposed to give you beachy waves in the morning, but if my hair is too wet when I twist it, I wake up and it's still damp and it doesn't wave, but at least it's stayed tame.  It's a quite comfy style because it's out of the way, and for me anyway, it changes the direction of my hair, which feels good for the scalp - seems to get the circulation moving differently or something.  I've also tried smaller twisted buns - up to four or six.

If I want more even waves or curls, I section my hair in various different patterns, curl the section around my finger, and bobby-pin it in to sleep in... sectioned in a vertical pattern for looser/lower curls, or rows of higher and lower sections if I want more volume.  Damper hair in this style will normally well dry by morning.

I use a silk pillowcase too, and if nothing else, it feels luxurious!

If your hair is long and bleached, I would avoid going to bed with it wet. It is more fragile when wet, so more likely to get damaged. I try and avoid washing my hair at night.
