I'm working my way to white hair and doing it safely, so over the next few months I need a treatment, mask, or conditioner in between bleaching.
I'm considering Joico K-pak...also any drugstore recs are appreciated.
K pak reconstructor is good for getting protein back in to your hair. You need a good deep moisturising conditioner with it though because protein treatments are drying.
Currently I've been garnier ultimate blends which work well with my hair and are silicone free so they don't just coat your hair. Tresseme naturals is also meant to be really good. (I'm pretty sure that's what it's called, I'm sure wicked pixie will correct me otherwise :p)
Also if you haven't used protein treatments before then be a little careful of how long you leave k pak on for as some people's hair (mine included) is susceptible to becoming dry and brittle from too much protein.
I had no idea you could leave the protein on too long. Good to know!
Does anyone layer treatments? Like could I put on (for example) some Argan oil, then leave in conditioner, then a hair mask for a few hrs?
EDIT: oh, what's best for split ends? I don't have much but I want to prevent it getting worse.
Umm I think it's better to do each in turn so one product doesn't block another from being absorbed by the hair.
And the only thing to do with split ends really is to cut them off. Not using heat styling is a good way of avoiding too many more being formed.
I don't ever heat style but my hair is already a short bob almost pixie so I can't cut it. They aren't bad. Anything I can do to keep them from getting worse
I definitely second the Tresemmé Naturals range of conditioners, as it was a recommendation from Wicked Pixie and works wonders, feels like a silicone product but isn't! Definitely K-pak too, as that absorbs right into the hair really nicely. Coconut oil is amazing as well, and of course argan oil, but I personally haven't found an affordable, silicone-free version to try yet.
I'm not sure if you have to worry about layering products if they're silicone-free? Perhaps oils may block other ingredients from absorbing, but I never worry about layering conditioners unless they've got silicone in them.
I'd say the very best thing you can do on your journey to white is go very slowly and give your hair time to get back to a normal condition between bleaches. Try to stretch washes and not over-shampoo, letting natural oils coat the hair as much as possible. Use dry shampoo if you need to freshen up between shampoos.
Hair never really feels the same after bleaching, but I've found it amazing how - if I stop peroxide-based/bleaching treatments for a good month or more at a time, treat my hair very gently, stay clear of heat-styling, don't over-brush when wet, and don't over-shampoo - it settles back into a more normal state, bounces back a bit, and feels stronger for another treatment.
Good luck, and hope to see pictures along your journey!
i honestly would trim it even though its short at the moment, the thing with split ends is that if left alone they travel up the hair shaft. itll seem like your hair never gets much longer when you have splits because for every few cms it grows out at the root its flaking off at the ends of the split hair.
theres nothing much you can do to stop them getting worse, you can only leave them or get rid of them
