Best Black Hair Dye?

Hey there,

So I am having a bit of a dilemma as I am not sure which hair dye to use :-/ I currently have dyed black hair but I don't really like the shade as it's not vibrant enough for me. I used Garnier Olia in Deep Black 1.0 but I a, not pleased with it as it is rather a soft black in the light rather than a deep black.

I was thinking of using this time either Garnier Nutrisse in Liquorice Black 1.0 or Revlon Buttercream in Black. However, I was thinking maybe you guys can help me out on this as I don't know which one of these shades will be better for me in terms of colour vibrancy and lasting? I want a good vibrant/deep black hair colour, pitch black, no blue undertones, just a pitch/jet black that will last long without fading to a dark brown after a few washes like all the other dyes I've used. Have any of you used any of these hair dyes?

Help and suggestions will be much appreciated πŸ˜‰

I havent used either of those shades but when i used to dye my hair with permanent black, i used loreal feria blackest black. It was the darkest deepest black dye i found.
If you want it to be a deeper black then you always have the option of using semi permanent dyes such as adore jet black on top of your already dyed hair. They are non damaging and you can top them up as often as you want.

Yep, topping up with direct dyes is always the best way. Black dyes will fade very quickly, never entirely, but that richness will disappear and they'll either be blue, brown or green based which will show through.

Also, doing it this way, you can just do your roots every time then top up with the direct dyes. That way you avoid a lot of damage done by continually going over your entire hair each time you use a permanent box dye. You can also mix a brown based and a blue based dye to get a rich solid black. The brown and blue will cancel each other out and look neutral. That's something you can't do with box dyes yet they will all be blue, brown or green based.

Well I did that before, I used a semi-permanent jet black dye from Adore on my hair and it did not colour my hair at all. I did this twice and no result. It's because there was no developer in the dye, I think it has to be done separately but it's too much of a hassle for me. I also think that's the case with all semi-permanent dyes; without the developer, they won't show up on dark hair like mine. So I cannot use them to top up my hair but buy a whole new dye and redye the whole lot. Correct me if I am wrong though.

Will a semi-permanent dye show up even on black hair dyed with a permanent black dye? Will it make a difference like make it more black/vibrant or no? I did that once on my dark brown/faded black hair and there was no result. I did that twice too. Was it the dye's fault or was it because there was no developer? I used Adore's Jet Black.

Most direct dyes don't use developers.

Depends on what kind of black it is... I mean if it's the darkest black possible, I highly doubt any dye will show on black. It just won't really work. But if you use some kind of another permanent dye (which of cource will have a developer to slightly lift colour), I think you might get some other colour in there (barely noticeable, but still there).

Personally I wouldn't dare to experiment with that, because I'd just avoid any damage I could cause my hair :/

That's what I thought as well. My hair is way too dark for any dye to show up really, let alone a semi-permanent dye. Strangely enough, I was told by some members on this forum that I should use it to top up my hair but I don't think they realise my hair is already black. Thank you for assuring me on this one πŸ˜‰

Permanent dyes use peroxide to first lift the hair to a lighter colour, and then deposit the colour molecules.
Over time, the tones fade and the peroxide lightened hair starts to show. This is when you can top up with direct dyes (all direct dyes are applied directly from the bottle with no developer added) and this is what was suggested.

Additionally, repeated applications of permanent dye will damage and lighten the hair further and further they are not designed to be used over the same hair many times.

If it didn't work for you then either the direct dye you chose isn't strongly pigmented enough or dark enough, or you didn't leave it on for long enough.

I saw in your other threads you are looking for the blackest possible dye. There are hennas or Bigen that come out very dark, but these are permanent you will have to cut them out of your hair.

Did you use it on top of a permanent dye, or just on it's own?

Black direct dyes like Adore will show up on very dark hair IF the cuticle has been raised (which is what the peroxide does). You don't want to keep repeating that damage though, if you can avoid it then it's always better. You do need that little bit of "damage" first though. So, use the permanent dye on your roots only, the rest has the previous damage and mechanical damage to help it stick.

I'm merging this with your other thread as there's three threads now with almost exactly the same subject. This is a small forum and we all read the same threads, so having more than one thread on the same subject will just lead to confusion.

Yes, we realise your hair is already black. I don't agree with ninka1320 in this case. We've had a lot of people who use the forum that have topped up dyed black hair with direct dyes to deepen and top up the black when fading.

If your hair is already too dark for any dye to show up, it sounds like it's far deeper black than you think.

Edited to add, if you dye over your whole head of hair every time you dye it's possible it's not black enough and direct dyes aren't sticking because it's too damaged. This is something we see quite often. It might feel ok, but if you use lots of products with silicone the damage could be masked.

Please note that the thread has been merged and that's the reason for the seeming double posts. Please don't double post past here πŸ™‚

Janine, I only said semi permanent dye of any other colour than black will be barely noticeable on black hair. I've never said you can't dye your hair black with semi dye each time it fades. I used to top up my permanent red colour with semi permanent red when it started to fade, until I got tired of the colour. 😂😂😂😈
I just didn't pay attention to the part where she said she wants to dye her dark hair with more black. I thought she wanted to use other colour 😂

i wasn't giving a personal dig at you, I promise πŸ™‚ I know you weren't saying you couldn't do it. I think you missed that it was black on black completely (partly because it was a different thread and that's exactly why it gets confusing to have more than one thread on the connected subject) and I missed that you hadn't realised that. It's all good πŸ™‚

Unfortunately because of the new thread and miscommunication the OP now thinks you disagree with me lol oh well
