Avoiding bright roots?

What colour are you doing? Is this the first time? What's the history?

Doing the roots last is correct if it's a fresh colour. Roots take faster with permanent dyes because of the heat of the hair. When you're doing the roots because it's a colour you already have, you do the roots first, then the rest for a short time at the end (though, this is not needed if you're topping up using an Adore dye). But tell us more and hopefully we can work out what's happening 🙂

I will be usuing garnier olia (vivid  garnet) tonight - to help cover greys and slight root growth
Hair is currently a reddy brown (but been dyed since pretty much forever) so this will hopefully be a bit brighter
Then I plan to use adore (intense red mixed with magenta) in the next couple of days when it arrives to really make the colour

So I'm guessing from what you say roots last?

No. It's actually more tricky than that. To make it brighter you need to remove some of the dye already in there. You'll end up with bright roots (also known as hot roots) whatever you do if you use that dye over what you have now.

The issue is, dye can't lift dye so it'll stay the same colour, or if you're unlucky, go even darker as it's adding more dye.

So, you need to hang fire until you can get a colour remover. Decolour remover is a good one. It'll likely be light enough to use the Adore dye over then, which I would do in the meantime because you need to wait a week after using a colour remover before using anything with peroxide in. It won't cover your roots, but you can do the Olia dye next week for the roots.

At which point you'll do the roots first. Then put it through the rest of your hair for the last 10 minutes. No longer. Then I'd redo the Adore.

When you need to do the roots again, ONLY do the ROOTS. Then you can top it all up with the Adore.
