The more time I spend on the 'net the more I feel old! People use abbreviations all the time and I have no clue what they mean, leaving me to ask "what is that?" and look like a right fool in a chat room. Either that or I quickly google it and delay my response, pretending to be answering the door so as not to look like I'm googling.

I'm going to compile a list here of all the stuff I find and if you have any to add please mention it in the thread and I'll add it to the list. The list will be alphabetical so you can find what you're looking for easily if you're stuck in a chat room as I have been before.

AFAIK - As Far As I Know
AFAIR - As Far As I Remember
AFK = Away From Keyboard
ALOL - Actually Laughing Out Loud
BBIAB - Be Back In A Bit
BRB = Be Right Back
BRT - Be Right There

IMHO = In my honest (humble) opinion.
IRL = In Real Life
LMAO= laugh my a**e off
LOL = Laugh(ing) Out Loud
Newb = "Newbie" or someone who's new to something.
NSFW - Not Safe For Work

ROFL = Rolling On the Floor Laughing (also roflcakes/roflcopters/lollerskates = extreme ROFL)
ROFLMAO - Rolling On The Floor Laughing My Ass Off
Squee = cry of happiness.
TBF - To Be Fair
TBH - To Be Honest
WIIFM - Whats In It For Me?
WIIFY - Whats In It For You?
WTF = What The F***

That's all I can remember and most of those I had to ask the person who sent them what they meant.

I remember when I first started using texts I though LOL meant Lots of Love and only realised once someone sent me ALOL and I had to ask what it meant - there I was thinking everyone loved me and they were laughing out loud instead!

Haha, I remember reading a guide like this about 13 years ago when I started using the internet πŸ˜€  These acronyms are so ingrained into my life now my boyfriend and I even speak to each other using them irl  (mostly jokingly but sometimes by accident!).  But yeah I'm a gamer so you probably won't need to use most of these ^^.

IMHO - In my honest (humble) opinion.
IRL - In Real Life ( just noticed I used that one above lol)
TBH - To Be Honest
TBF - To Be Fair
BBIAB - Be Back In A Bit
WYSIWYG - What you see is what you get (mainly pertaining to text editors on forums such as this one where you can edit fonts etc)
NSFW - Not Safe For Work
BRT - Be Right There

roflcakes/roflcopters/lollerskates - extreme ROFL

Some numbers ones :
10Q - Thank you
1337 - LEET (Elite)  Spawned LEETSPEAK where numbers substitute letters
<3 - Heart (on it's side)
