Dry Eyes

Does anyone else suffer from dry eyes?

I've been having severe problems with burny, stingy eyes for a few years now, and I finally mentioned it to a doctor last summer when I'd suffered about three weeks straight, who referred me to an ophthalmologist.  They did some thorough tests and, even though my eyes felt 'okay-ish' at the time of the test, she said that she could see extreme irritation, swollen vessels etc., in my eyes.

The ophthalmologist suggested using artificial tear eyedrops as often as I can, so I did for a while, and the condition got better.  But I recall in the summertime, my eyes being sensitive to EVERYTHING, like my partner's cooking (no onions or strong ingredients involved) and having to walk out of the kitchen, nail varnish, charity shops (ha ha), trains and enclosed spaces (probably lots of dust and little ventilation).  And the burning and stinging lasted for at least 2 to 3 hours at a time.

It normally happens between end of winter and end of summer, so I thought it was hayfever-related.  Although this past week, it's been coming on again, and this morning in the middle of winter, I had to leave the house for work with no eye makeup, squinting and eyes tearing like mad, and I looked like I was crying on the train, ha ha.  (You do make funny faces when your eyes are stinging!)  It lasted another 2 to 3 hours this morning and finally cleared up when I sat down for my cup of tea before work.  The coffee shop was relatively empty, so I put on my eye makeup then, lol.

I probably just have to use those artificial tear drops more often, but as you can probably imagine, dry eye syndrome is a nightmare for someone who likes eye makeup!

Just wondered if anyone else has experienced something similar...

I have had this on and off for a few years - usually get it very late at night when tired or early morning when not had a restful sleep.  I cannot put drops or water etc in my eyes so tried Optrex Closed Eye Spray which was brilliant.  You close eyelid and spray a few times and it really moistens the eye within a few minutes.  I use this even when I get a bit of grit or dust in my eye and have let a few other people try it when they get something in eye too - they all swear by it now.

Ignore the price on the link as it's cheaper in Supermarkets like Morrisons etc - I think I was something like Β£8 last time I got it and the bottle lasts for ages.

Thank you, Nickki!  I've seen it advertised, those ones you spray with your eyes closed.  But for some reason I forgot about it.

I will give it a try!  How irritating you cannot use eye drops though, but thank goodness for the closed-eye spray.  That sounds like a great alternative because sometimes the artificial tears irritate my eyes if they're already in a state.

I'll have a look for it tomorrow πŸ™‚

I've never heard of that stuff I may have to order some! I have suffered from dry eyes for years and I hate it. Wearing contacts doesn't help but I hate wearing my glasses I feel like I can't see (peripheral vision) and they make my face hurt if I wear them more than a couple hours. Before I got contacts when I was 12 every day was such a pain (literally) from wearing my glasses. I'm sensitive to anything like that - a new ring/bracelet/necklace/headband.

My eyes burn sometimes too and it lasts anywhere from a half hour to 3-4 hours, sometimes it's on and off all day. I haven't noticed any kind of a pattern with it except that it happens more in the spring and early summer in the mornings mainly. I've tried everything (except for the thing Nickki mentioned!) and they only help for a half hour or my eyes end up feeling even more irritated.

Yes, mine lasted anywhere from a half hour to three hours too, and it happened several times a day everyday for about three weeks straight last summer.  It was seriously frustrating - that's most of your day spent squinting and in pain.

I do have to say that I don't think medicine is as advanced it could be.  I mean, you'd think there would be a better solution to burning eyeballs than "you've got dry eye syndrome, use OTC drops as many times as you can everyday", lol.

For me my eyes used to get a very tight feeling and when I moved them (even with eyes closed) it felt like broken glass or sand was inside them.  When that happened I needed to stay away from light and wear a sleep eye mask.  This stuff is great though as really eases the pain and I can use it even when I get a tingling feeling like my eyes may be drying.  If i've had a late night I use it anyway so I don't wake up in pain.  You should try it xx

I'm definitely going to order it! I absolutely hate when my eyes get that stinging - it drives me insane. I physically cannot open my eyes because it hurts too much. Sometimes if I expose them to cold by going outside if it's cold, sticking my head in the freezer (lol), putting a cold compress on them, it helps, sometimes even just going outside helps a bit even if it's not cold - if it's sunny though it kinda defeats the whole purpose though....I will for sure try this stuff, I'm excited about it! There's been a couple times I've been driving to work and it's happened! Literally had to pull over into a parking lot or someones driveway and just sit there + call the salon + tell them "SORRY gonna be late, my eyes are burning"  =[  I hate it! lol
