I think I may have been using the wrong Joico stuff!  πŸ™  So I've just bought myself this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190529559372&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_906wt_1139

As soon as it arrives, I'll give it another go, and see if the multi-step kit works better for me than the stuff I originally bought!

I just got the home kit thing with the 4 different bits (shampoo, conditioner, reconstructor and hydrator) and I've just washed my hair and OMG, my hair feels amazing, still a tiny bit gummy, but no where near like it was so I reckon another wash in a few days and it will be back to nice healthy hair πŸ™‚

I went to my local beauty supply store to grab some of the reconstructor, the man who owns the place talked me out of buying it because he didn't think my hair was damaged enough to use it - despite my hair being very dry, and extremely gummy/tangly/breaking off when wet! He said it would deposit too much protein into my hair and do more damage than good, and talked me into buying another product (L'Oreal Absolut Repair Masque, which did improve my hair a tiny bit after one use but the results were just meh.)

Anyone have any experience of the Joico reconstructor actually *damaging* their hair, or does this guy just not know what he's talking about? I'm going to try the L'Oreal masque a few more times, but if it doesn't improve my hair's condition I'll go back to get the reconstructor.

It doesn't damage hair.

It leaves it a bit dry from the protein deposits, but that's what deep conditioners are for.  All reconstructors will leave hair a little bit dry, because they lift the cuticle up slightly to deposit protein on it, and deep conditioners help smooth it all back down.

In fact, my hair is healthy now, but I still use it once a week because I have fairly fine hair and it helps strengthen it--even down to my roots, which were never badly damaged in the first place.

I've also noticed that split ends seem to take a lot longer to form since I started using it--even when my hair was still really healthy, they'd split after about two months.  I've been using Joico religiously since March and only began to notice split ends in June.

Yet another testimony to the amazingness of the reconstructor!

After going from black to blonde, my hair was very rough, dry and tangled. This stuff has helped so much - my hair condition now feels almost like it used to before I attacked it with bleach.

I find the reconstructor to be much more effective if I finger-comb my hair before getting in the shower, then comb the reconstructor through with a very wide-tooth comb (I used to just lazily massage it into uncombed hair, which didn't work too well...most people are probably not silly enough to do this though ;-)).

can i ask if its ok to use with dyed hair? If it makes it fade a bit quicker, i might not try it until the vibrancy has gone out of my hair and im not sensitive to fading.

Yeah I found that too. Did mine yesterday and was a proper good girl about it and hung around in the bathroom for ages letting the reconstructer then hydrator do their work. Usually I get bored and wash it off too quickly. But the time before when I washed my hair there were LOADS of bits of hair in the bottom of the bath from a couple mm to about 3 inches long that had snapped off. Haven't bleached it for ages either. Oh boy did I have a stress!!!
That's what had me rushing back to my joico and am so glad I put in all that time and effort because it is worlds better and actually went curly for the first time in yonks!
Will be buying more next week to make sure I don't run out.
