Tresemme Split Remedy Serum is one of several Tresseme products that contain polyquanternium-28 and PVM/MA copolymer which make up the PEC complex.
It promises to seal up 80% of split ends... I did not have the patience to count my splits before and after use, even for the sake of science, so I can't speak about how true the "80%" is.
As we learned from the PEC post, the PEC complex is a proven winner for sealing split ends. This product does work well for that. The rest of the ingredients however, leave a little something to be desired. The bottle is pump action and always dispenses WAY too much product. I get a squirt bigger than a US quarter no matter how light I press. The product itself is a slightly sticky and fairly runny goo. It has a definite silicone feel to it, if you don't like 'cones you won't want to use this because it's loaded with them. The 'cones are useful for giving the ends a nice smooth finish but they make my hair feel heavy and weighed down.
I have tried this product on damp hair and dry hair. It works best when applied to damp hair and hit with a blow dryer. On dry hair it seems to barely do anything.
The first time I tried it I applied to damp hair and hit it with a blow dryer. I only found 2 split ends, snipped them off then went to bed. By morning I found 8 split ends. As for how many I had before, since I did not count them I can only say it was "a lot". My hair is prone to split ends. After using it again last night on damp then blow dried hair I counted about 12 split ends. None of my split ends were wide-open Y shapes like before, I can clearly see the split pieces are closer together but not completely sealed.
PEC complex is a temporary treatment for split ends. I have noticed that this product seals my split ends for about a day or so. With each day since using it more and more splits unseal.
Conclusion:
After using this product the ends of my hair are less prone to tangling and knotting. The ends appear and feel smoother but are weighed down a bit. Split ends are less visible but this effect wears off in a day.
i used the actual tresemme split remedy conditioner and found pretty much the same thing. it feels great putting it in the hair, no matter how tangled and gnarly my hair felt (after bleach bathing), i put this in and immediately i could completely run my fingers or a wide toothed comb through my hair with complete ease and no tangling at all. so i think its good at preventing more damage that is caused by tangling/combing and such, since my hair doesnt even get tangled at all after using the conditioner. as the days pass though, it starts to feel more like "normal" though. i did find that my natural wavy-ish hair was more pronounced and my waves after using it are so much more fluid and even. usually theres waves here and there, straight in some places, curly in others, this is how my hair always has been. but using this i somehow get a really nice pretty + consistent wave pattern, which is nice! i dont have to bother styling it.the only thing is, if iuse it on the hair by my scalp, even if i feel like i rinse it out completely, it almost feels like i have a super light gel or setting spray by my roots. i brush through it with a boar bristle brush though and it feels normal again.
in the origional PEC complex post, puerkz posted a link to the actual study/experiment done on the complex, and in it it basically showed that the more you comb it the more the seal breaks down. i find too that the results are most prevalent the first day and as days go by it slowly wears off. i am going to continue using this conditioner though for its ability to keep my hair from tangling and knotting, which is where most of my damage really comes from typically, trying to de tangle my super fine long hair.
I have tried the shampoo and conditioner. I haven't been impressed TBH, but I have only used the shampoo once and the conditioner twice, so may get a better result over time. The conditioner felt heavy, just like any other cone laden conditioner as I applied it, although I did notice a lot more water stayed in my ends than usual. I didn't brush or comb and let it dry as usual, but I have yet to notice any improvement in the condition of my hair. I was hoping it would feel smoother, or that it would stop it getting so tangly, (even if just the action of the cones) but it feels just the same as before I used it. I had better results with the Tresemme Keratin Smooth mask, which made my hair much smoother/shinier than my usual cone-free conditioner.
I bought the Tresemme Split Remedy Masque but only tried it once so far. I gave my hair a week or so using silicones, but now hoping to prep for my next bleach process, so I think I'm starting to stay clear of them for a while again.
I bought the "masque" because the cones seemed lower in the list of ingredients than in the conditioner. I don't know if cosmetic ingredients lists are the same as food ingredients lists? - ha ha - the higher the quantity of the particular ingredient, the higher on the list it appears.
Yes, they are.
Did you see a difference from the masque?
I think the serum is probably going to be the least obnoxious for silicones since you need only apply it to the ends of your hair. That's one of the reasons why I chose it as silicones weigh my super fine hair down.
I'm surprised I like it as much as I do because I have hated every single Tresemme product I have used in the last 2 years. I wanted to get the Joico one but the supply store that literally has a wall of Joico products 9 feet tall and 6 feet wide doesn't carry it.
I really like that it keeps my ends from tangling up and knotting so I think I'll keep using it
To be fair, I didn't give it a proper try because I used it only the once with tons of other conditioners the week after my bleaching. Planning to use it tonight and see if it makes any difference. Will report back!
i want to try the serum but i didnt see it when i bought the conditioner. il have to look around at other stores to see if i can find it. i was at a crappy kmart looking at halloween costumes and all their products are so unorganized and all over the place. they probably had it but i just couldnt find it because it was probably thrown next to the deodorant or something lol
I managed to find it at Walmart (amazing considering my local store's beauty department is a disgusting mess with dumped out product on shelves and broken displays, I try to go to the one in my hometown because of this). Kmart's are all dumps, I would be surprised if you could even find someone to cash you out even if you found what you wanted.
Ya i absolutely hate kmart. We have 1 walmart that is still "nice" its clean + organized, but theres some, like the one in dearborn, mi...omg i feel like i need to wear a hazmat suit + carry an AK47 walking in there
I tried my Tresemme Split Remedy Masque yesterday and let it sit on my hair for well over 30 minutes, concentrating it on the ends and the fringe/bangs, where my hair looks most chaotic.
And I really wanted to put it to the test, so I applied it to dry hair, intending to wash it, then used a build-up removing shampoo (I'm out of proper clarifying, so I hope that did the trick!) to try to break down any silicones that would have been deposited. Of course, I always have to condition, but I used my normal conditioners I've been using lately: Provoke Touch of Silver + Joico Intense Hydrator (down to my last drops of that!).
I took before pictures, which was after about two days without shampooing, and after pictures, for which I waited a full 24 hours because my hair just looked a bit frizzier after washing yesterday. I'd have to admit, I didn't see or feel results immediately, and in fact, my hair looked a bit drier immediately afterwards, but that may have been just a result of the shampoo. The product felt really smooth and silky in the application, but I was a bit disappointed that the ends still looked more frazzled than I hoped. Although now, after looking at the before and after pictures, there seems to be a tiny bit of an improvement, mostly in the fringe.

It was a bit difficult to get an identical angle to yesterday's pictures for comparison, but I tried!
An update on the Tresemme Split Remedy shampoo/conditioner. I have used them both regularly and exclusively, maybe 6 times now. I will not be using them again! My ends have become harder and coarser, not brittle but definitely firmer. They do not feel nice at all. My daughter also tried them out and found the same, she really hated the way it made her hair feel. I made her try as she does have some spit ends (due a trim) whereas mine was just a bit dry at the ends.
So if any body wants them, PM me.
I washed with Head and Shoulders and left mayonnaise on for a couple of hours before rinsing and using my cone free conditioner last night, and my ends feel a lot better today.
@Alexia thanks for putting before and after photos up! thats pretty much the same kina results i have.
@Wicked Pixie that sucks that it didnt work out well for you or your daughter. What shampoo + conditioner do you like to use normally?
I do still like this conditoner, but i miss using matrix biolage hydratherapie shampoo and ultra hydratherapie conditioning balm, and especially aveda's damage remedy shampoo and conditioner. i love the aveda ones so so much but they are so expensive! and the consistency is thinner than id like, i like really thick conditioner, so i feel like i need to use more with the aveda.
I don't normally use shampoo, I CO wash, my favourite conditioner is Tresemme Naturals. I only use sulphate shampoos when I am actively fading my colour. My daughter uses any cheap shampoo and conditioner though, so she was my 'control' lol.
Thanks for the comments. WickedPixie, I wonder what it was in the products that made your hair firmer and courser? That's definitely not a good result.
I think there are much better products out there, and I doubt the Tresemme Masque will be something I use regularly, maybe just from time to time!
