Review of Kenra Color Correcting System

Today I used the Kenra Color Correcting System to try to pull the dark dyed bits out of my hair.

In January of this year, I had my hair dyed a dark brown (probably a level 3 if I had to guess) and then my hair stylist did highlights so that I had an ombre color.  I early May, I used a highlift red (Matrix SoColor SoRED) to lift all of my hair so that I could be a vibrant red.  After using that product, I have been using Majicontrast Red to lift my roots before using SFX dye (Hot Lava or a mix of Hot Lava and Candy Apple).  The highlift product didn't touch the dark dye, of course, so I was left with dark strands.  The dark bits looked like intentional lowlights.  At first, I really liked them.  But I'm wanting to go brighter, and so I felt it was time to strip the color.

Here is a bit about the system from the Kenra Color Manual:

Q: What is the Kenra Color Correcting System?
A: Kenra Color Correcting System gently, quickly, and safely
removes oxidative pigments without disturbing the hair’s natural
pigments. Its two-part, non-bleach formulation mixes readily into
an easy-to-apply cream and can be processed with or without
heat. The system can be used up to three times in a row to
remove undesired pigments. A color service can be performed
immediately following the removal process.

This color correction systems requires a neutralizer after rinsing; the directions say to use a demi-permanent activator 9 or permanent developer 10 vol for 3 minutes following shampooing out with a clarifying shampoo.

I used Joico K-Pak Chrome Activator.  This is a creme developer designed to be use exclusively with Joico K-Pak Chrome color series which is a demi-permanent color line.

Results: for one application, I felt the results were fair.  I still have some darker strands of hair, but not nearly the intensity of before.  This product says it can be use up to three times in a row, until desired result is achieved.  I used the product up in the first application and didn't have anymore on hand.  It left my hair feeling quite dry, so I don't know if I'd be willing to attempt it a second time.  I did not condition because I'm planning to apply SFX dye this afternoon.  I will likely do a K-Pak Reconstructor and Intense Moisture treatment following my SFX dye.  Now... to decide which color...  πŸ˜›  Full Nuclear Red... or a mix of Nuclear Red and Hot Lava.  Decisions...  ::)

Noteworthy: This system did pull quite a bit of red out of my hair... but not all of it.  I am a lovely bright shade of gingery orange.  It's almost nice enough to keep!  πŸ˜‰

First pic is the color I had before using the color correction system.

Cheers!

As hubby was applying dye for me... he said I had a lovely rainbow of colours going on.  Some blonde, some lighter orange, some deeper orange and some bits of pale brown.  πŸ˜‰

The Kenra stuff stinks.  It reminds me of those days when I was a teenager and getting a permanent wave... kind of like a rotten egg smell.  The dye brought the smell back to life.  It's making my eyes water... eeew.

EDIT: I've recolored with a 50/50 mixture of Hot Lava and Nuclear Red.  I can still see the dark dye.  It will just have to grow out!
