As some of you may have seen in the 'Last thing I bought' thread, I recently bought quite the haul from Lush! Here is the list of what I purchased:
Dark Angels face scrub
Popcorn lip scrub
2 bath bombs
Coolaulin conditioner
American Dream conditioner
Gentle Lentil shampoo bar
Jackie Oates colour supplement
Emotional Brilliance face powder
Lemony flutter body butter
Shine so bright hair balm
H'suan Wen Hua hair treatment
I haven't used all of them yet, but here are some brief reviews of what I have used:
Dark Angels face scrub - messy but effective (it's like playing with mud in the shower - you have to mix it up to a paste with water). It also feels a little weird slathering something black all over your face (it's made with rhassoul mud and charcoal), but it exfoliates brilliantly and is great for oily skin.
Popcorn lip scrub - I LOVE this stuff! Basically, it's a little pot of grainy stuff that you rub over your lips to exfoliate them, and it's edible, so you lick it off afterwards, then follow with a lip balm. This one tastes like mild salted caramel! It is absolutely gorgeous, and makes your lips really smooth! Will definitely be buying this again!
American Dream conditioner - I really wanted to love this conditioner, because I love the smell of it so much, but I just don't think it's the right formula for my hair. It's silicone free (for those who are cone free), but not SLS free. As conditioners go, it's a lovely thick creamy consistency and smells divine, but it just doesn't make my hair feel great. My hair is extremely curly, thick and coarse (not only are the individual strands of hair very thick, there's also a lot of it!), so this would probably be great for someone with normal or fine hair, but sadly, not great for mine. It's not a total disaster, it doesn't make my hair feel horrible or anything! I'll probably get on better with the Coolaulin conditioner, as this is coconut based, and my hair seems to love coconut conditioners, but I haven't tried this one yet.
Gentle Lentil shampoo bar - again, I love the smell of this, so I really wanted to love the shampoo, but once again, it doesn't seem to be quite the right formulation for my hair. Much the same as the American Dream, although it does lather up beautifully, it doesn't make my hair feel great afterwards. I will probably try the Trichomania shampoo bar next or the Curly Wurly shampoo, as this one is coconut based. My only issue with the Gentle Lentil is that it's much softer than Lush's round shampoo bars (this one comes as a rectangular slab), so I seem to use much more for each wash, and this one probably won't last as long as the round ones do. Again, for someone with normal or thin hair, this would probably be great, and it does smell fabulous - it's the same smell as the Butterball bath bomb.
Lemony flutter body butter - I love this! It has a gorgeous zingy citrus smell, and is a bit grainy in texture, but as you rub it in, the grains melt into a skin softening oil! It really moisturised the dry areas on my feet, and has made them feel soft and gorgeous after just one use! There's not much in the tub, but a little really does go a long way! Will be buying this one again too!
H'suan Wen Hua hair treatment - I've used this before and I love it. You put it on dry hair, leave it to soak in for around 20-30 mins with a shower cap on, then wash out and shampoo/condition afterwards. It makes my hair feel really soft and luscious, and makes it feel a lot stronger too. There is a protein element in this treatment (it has eggs as one of the ingredients), and it has quite a strong smell. I don't find the smell unpleasant, but others might. My only issue with this is that because you put it on dry hair and because I have so much hair, I end up using about 1/3 of the tub each time I use it, so it doesn't last very long!
Shine so bright hair balm - marketed as a split end balm, as we all know, there is no such thing as a split end mender! But this little pot does make your hair shiny and add a bit of frizz control. It has a nice, light smell, and is olive oil based, not silicone based. It is however, a very tiny pot, but a little does go a long way. I like this one as well, so will be buying again.
I haven't yet tried the coolaulin conditioner, the jackie oates colour supplement or the emotional brilliance powder, so I'll add reviews of those once I've tried them!
UPDATE: I tried the Coolaulin conditioner today, and what I suspected was indeed correct! My hair does like Coolaulin much more than American Dream. The coolaulin made my hair feel really soft and silky! Unfortunately, I don't particularly like the smell of coolaulin. π I much prefer the smell of American Dream! While you're actually using the coolaulin, it smells kind of musty, which is really weird, because I was expecting a coconutty smell, however, my hair smells much more coconutty now that it's dried, which is also quite strange! But, as the musty smell is only while you're actually using it in the shower, and not when it dries, I can definitely live with that!
Thanks for this! I think I will definitely be trying the Popcorn Lip Scrub and the Lemony Flutter Body Butter with my next Lush purchase!
Just to add a little further update, after a few days of using the American Cream conditioner, my hair seems to be getting on much better with it! I don't think it'll be perfect for me, but used in rotation with Coolaulin, I think it can work for my hair! Yay! I love the smell of this so much!
I have also tried the Jackie Oates colour supplement and the emotional brilliance face powder now. So what I found was:
Jackie Oates - a good shade for my skin - very pale, but has a slight yellow undertone, which is good for me because my skin tends to get red easily. I put this on over top of a BB cream, and have to say, I didn't notice any difference to my skin after putting it on, aside from being slightly more even. However, when I then put on the emotional brilliance powder, my skin looked really creamy and lovely!
Emotional brilliance translucent powder - a great product, particularly when used in conjunction with the Jackie Oates. I will say, however, these two products did nothing to combat my oily, shiny skin, but at this time of year, particularly with the heat we've been having (I tried these a few days ago when the weather was still really hot and humid), nothing combats that! I will probably get a better picture of how well these work for my skin once I use them in cooler weather. The one gripe I have with this powder is that it comes in a particularly small jar, which is difficult to get a powder brush into, making it very messy and wasteful to apply, so I will probably decant it into an empty powder sifter pot instead.
I use angels on bare skin during the winter. It's really gentle and moisturising but has a slight exfoliant, I get a pinch if it add a drop of warm water to turn it milky then apply to a wet face using circular motions, this is good if your skin goes dry through the harsh winter months but still needs moisture at the same time! Also smells really lovely. In the summer I use aqua marina still moisturising but no exfoliant. And I apply this the same as angels Love these two!
Ocean salt is a really good scrub aswell. But I used it more as a treat for the body once a month. its pretty invigorating. its a little too harsh for my face.
Jasmin and henna fluff-eaze was one of my favourite hair masks smelt gorgeous too. Not sure if its been made retro. Haven't seen it for a while! Makes your hair smell really lovely and made my hair very soft and shiny.
Big shampoo was brill but I had completely virgin hair when I used this last. It came in a small pot but you only need a tiny bit so it does last really well.
The only bad review I have is for their purple shampoo. I can't remember the name. It wasn't cheap and it did very little to tone the grassiness in my bleached hair, and it definitely didnt help its condition. But it may work very differently on someone else's hair.
I also use the Jackie Oates as I'm a typical English Rose (pasty as anything with horrible dark circles). I've found that it gives me enough colour to look healthy but without being overly made up. I also like that you can use as much or as little as you like, if you want a heavier coverage you can build it up a little more. It's certainly enough to disguise my dark circles π
