Cocochoco Brazilian Keratin Treatment

Lately, I've been relying mostly on reconstructors and moisture conditioners, and experimenting with new ones.  Found many that are really good.  But as I took the time today to get a hold of the ingredients of my favourite hair product ever, after my bleaching, I will be returning to using this again in full-force:

Cocochoco Brazilian Keratin Treatment*

(I truly could have sworn it would be a silicone-based product judging by the instant shine and results, but I'm happy to report it is in fact SILICONE-FREE)

I've used keratin treatments for the past 3 - 4 years, during which I've gone for a couple professional treatments, but mostly done it at home, sometimes twice in one week, i.e., after every shampoo!  It seriously gives an instant shine and softness, and makes the hair feel strong and as durable as ever.  It has allowed me to grow out my hair to a modest length, which is long for me, much longer than it has never been before...  I highly recommend this product!

It isn't considered particularly inexpensive, although it is extremely great value and definitely affordable.  It is applied to clarified hair (although I always condition too!), and I'd say definitely use gloves because it makes my hands peel like crazy the next day if I use it and don't wash my hands right after using it.  It is recommended to blow-dry the hair, but most often I just let it air-dry and give it one last dry when it is nearly water-free.  Once the hair is 100% bone-dry, break out the straightening iron and flatten section by section... the results are always incredible.

With keratin treatments, it has been recommended to use an iron up to 400-degree heat, but I only have been able to find 230-degree irons, and the last salon I went to also used the lower heat, it's always worked with 230...

... which is why this post goes quite nicely with Katie's recommendation for the Jilbere Titanium Flat Iron (I'm so tempted by that iron to use with my keratin!).

* Ingredients:

Aqua, Cetyl Alcohol, PURE KERATIN, Stearic acid, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran extract, Beta Vulgaris (Beet) Root extract, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel)Bark/ leaf/Twig extract, Calendula Officinalis flower extract, Anthemis Nobilis (Chamomile) flower extract, Camellia Sinensis (Green tea) Extract, Behentrimonium Chloride, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea butter), Oenothera Bienis (Evening Primrose) oil, Hippophae Rhamnoides oil, Chondrus Crispus (Carageenan) extract, Maris Sal (Dead Sea salt), Dehydroacetic acid, Aloe (Vera) Barbadensis leaf juice, Allantoin, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Squalane, Ascorbic acid, Borago Officinalis (Borage) seed oil, Fragrance, Retinyl Palmitate, Phenoxyethanol, Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohaxene Carboxaldehyde, Butylphenyl methylpropinonal, Coumarin, Linalool, Limonene, Alpha-isomethyl ionone, Benzyl salicylate

I'd seriously recommend trying keratin treatments - I find it's even better than the Joico Reconstructor, and I'm so pleased to learn it's silicone-free.

Just done my bleach bath, whipped on the keratin, and did the flat iron.  Yes, it requires a heat appliance, but it's difficult to describe how beautifully the hair responds, it must seal down the cuticle really well, and the hair feels sturdy and almost 'flows'... definitely worth the heat-styling and the money!

I've even used it without the flat iron, just as a styling product and leave-in conditioner, and it still makes a huge difference, but I'm not sure that it's being used to its full potential without sealing it in with some heat.

There is one thing I'll add. The straightening your doing, that itself sets the cuticle down too, but not really in the best way. But that's part of the reason it feel a so silky after doing it. I'm not saying that what you say the keratin is doing isn't happening, but it could be that you're attributing some of that feeling towards it. I know you say it feels good after without straightening, but it's still possible πŸ™‚

Yes of course, fair enough.  But this stuff gives the hair a "weight" and "sway" that's hard to describe.  Hair always feels silky after straightening it.

Plus, my hair has never been able to grow as it has in the last few years... I do attribute a lot of that to keratin!

what is your natural hair texture? is it fine/medium/coarser thin/average/full? my hair is super fine but itslike i have a thick cuticle, it feels very different than normal fine hair. you say this gives a "weight" to the hair and sway, i know that feeling that youre talking about, which i would love for my hair! when i used to dye it black, right after dying it, especially with wella's demi it would have that feeling to it and gradually decrease until it was time to dye again, and i miss it! any of the times my hair has been a lighter color, its like the strands feel finer and my hair feels lighter if that makes sense. i miss the "weighted" feeling i used to have with black hair. it used to also have that "sway" about it. now with my hair being lighter it feels more like my natural virgin hair and i hate it. plus if its going to keep my hair healthier and stronger so that i can continue growing it out easier, im all for it! i really think i am going to buy this or one similar that requires the same process. where did you get it from?

Quick question, as you've mentioned this before - how do you know you've got a thick cuticle but fine hair? πŸ™‚

I'd say my hair is naturally medium in texture; since the texture seems to change when I process it, I'll have to refer to how it behaves under normal conditions when I'm not messing around with colour or highlights!  I was born naturally curly, but it was somewhere between wavy and perm-curl, i.e. not tight-tight curls.  I hated it because the curls were always uneven and uncontrollable.  What I was able to do was to wrap up ringlets after washing and bobby-pin them to my head, letting them dry; then they'd hold well and turn out neat and smooth.

I don't know if it's the illusion, but I experience the same when my hair is light vs dark; dark always feels much thicker and fuller, and since I've been going lighter, it's felt much more fine and gentle in texture.  In fact, it was feeling so thin when I was stripping the silicones about a month ago, I was getting a bit concerned!  And I avoided the keratin because I thought it had to have silicones, because I was convinced it would have turned out to be another rubbish product, but it's not - yay.

The keratin does bring back that weight and solidity; by touch, I would never have guessed I had bleach all over my hair yesterday, it's feeling so smooth and almost instantly recovered.  The blonde strands still look a bit finer than my darker strands did, but I don't feel like I've got to be so careful in brushing through to the ends, and with two bleachings in the past month (mind you, gentle bleachings, not full-on), I'd expect my hair to feel much more fragile.

There's an instant shine when you apply the keratin, and using the flat iron after it's dried almost creates a mirror effect, it's really amazing stuff!

I get it off eBay, and I just checked for you, the supplier I use does ship worldwide, looks like the rates are Β£2.95 for shipping to the US.  I noticed my local Waitrose grocery store down the street started stocking some brand of keratin treatment, so I went to look at it yesterday, and that brand does contain silicone, so some brands may... I'm sure you'd check for ingredients before purchasing.

I hope you can get a hold of it and see how it works for you - is there any way you can get a sample from anywhere, I wonder?

(Mods, am I allowed to post a link to the exact product on eBay?  If so, I'll come back and modify this post if necessary.  Thanks.)

my hair is definitely fine, but it has a different texture and feel than normal people with fine hair. its really hard to describe, its like, its fine, thin to medium density, but it has more weight to it i guess you could say...like i said its hard to describe, but in all the clients ive ever had ive never had one that has hair like mine. i think its to do with my heritage - im polish and welsh, but also cherokee and maltese...its like my hair is a combination of the finer, easy lifting, blonde, dense hair and the thicker, resistant, dark, coarser hair. it may sound silly, but its like the inside of my hair is more like polish and welsh, but the outside, cuticle is more like the maltese and cherokee indian. my hair feels like a cross between native american/maltese heavyness and resistant hair,  and the fine, lighter qualities of the other two. i just have never seen anyone with hair that feels like mine before or responds like mine does, and ive had probably thousands of clients over the years.

i checked at sallys at their keratin treatments and they were loaded with silicones πŸ™ i think im going to order the one youre talking about for myself:)

I see, that's so interesting!  A combination of hair types.  That makes sense.  My father always had thicker, curlier/wavier hair which made him look so attractive... and he still has got a full head of {now white} hair.  My mother, bless her, had very fine hair which she'd curl up with rods and sit under the hairdryer.  She always said she'd love to have curls like me.  I was ready to trade her any day!

Shame about Sally's!  I hope you can try out the keratin, and though the seller I use is brilliant, you may be able to find another silicone-free option more cheaply on eBay or Amazon.  I tried a couple keratin suppliers in the past but have been consistent with this seller lately, so I haven't shopped around for a while!

Whoa, so quick!  I can't wait to hear what you think, Katie, especially since you work with so many types of hair as well, you'd probably know what to look for.

I just glided a bit of keratin through my ends last night, after the second night in a row of toning, because my hair didn't really like to get wet and have to dry again.  And I can't stop petting my hair it's so soft, ha ha.

I used to saturate my hair with the stuff but a little bit is all you really need to feel such a difference.  Any questions, just ask!  I don't follow all the instructions to a "T", and I'm sure you'll sense what will work for you.

I felt like I got hit by a bus all day, I didn't have the stregth or energy to do it πŸ™ I will be doing it tomorrow morning though, I will post about it on here! I like the consistency + texture of it - it feels like a little bit does go a long way πŸ™‚ I like the scent of it too. It has a natural kinda hint of sweetness to it. I'm feeling a bit better now so I'm sure I'll be up for it in the morning πŸ™‚ I'm excited!

Ooooh :-* I get those days too!  You've got to be relaxed and enjoy using it, no rush!

It's nice and slippery, so yes, a little does go a long way.  And it's got such an interesting scent - you describe it well!  Thing about it is that after I use it, then next day I can smell it as my hair falls in front of my nose, hee hee.

Hope you get a quiet few moments to yourself and enjoy!

So, I totally love this stuff! My hair feels incredible! It feels and looks like it's fuller, it is surprisingly smooth - which, I didn't think I was going to notice much in the "smoothing" department, because my hair is already naturally very smooth/silky thanks to my more compact cuticle/genetics. Normally when I flat iron it it feels and looks a bit smoother, but with THIS stuff, just blowdrying it in my hair seems smoother than it ever has been before, ever. It definitely is very different from that smoothness you get from simply flat ironing your hair. It's very hard to describe, but my hair just feels so much more enhanced in every way. It's straighter (even befre the flat ironing), smoother, fuller, thicker, and what I love most about it - it has that 'weight' and 'sway' to it πŸ™‚ Kind of like when you get a blow out at a salon, or like how good quality wigshave that particular weight and sway to them. I don't know how else to describe it other than those two words. I totally love this stuff.

A little bit really does go a long way. I left about an inch from the scalp to the application like the instructions said. I used between 1/2oz to 3/4oz for bra strap length hair. Usually I need much more product - I use at least 3 oz minimum with conditioning treatments and 5-6 oz when dying with a semi. So the 3.4oz jar should last quite a while πŸ™‚

The only, only thing I don't like about it is the smell. It smells rather gentle and sweet in the jar, but once you start putting it on your hair - it was very strong. I am very, very sensitive to smells though. Like, there's only 1 perfume I can wear and 1 body spray I can wear - anything else makes me nauseous/gives me a headache/makes me throw up. It's not a bad smell at all, it's just very strong to me. Next time I'll be applying it in our living room where there's a strong cross breeze if you open the windows on either side of the room, lol. Like the name says - it does have a cocoa smell to it.

I overall absolutely love this and I'd recommend it to anyone! Thanks @Alexia, this stuff totally rocks!
