Aphogee Protein Treatment

Reeeeeally wanted to share my experience with this, because I think it's the most useful hair product in the whole wide world (well, sort of).

It's for people who have totally destroyed their hair with bleach or dye, to the point where they have a lot of hair falling out and breakage. I used it when I had so much hair fall out in the shower that it'd cover the drain hole completely, and I had a mini mohawk on my head of where some of my hair had just broken off.

You can buy it on folica.com and Amazon, that's what came up on Google but I'm sure there's others. They have it at Sally Beauty Supply too.

Anyway:

Like I said, I had a lot of hair breakage. I'd been DIY-ing platinum blonde for a while, and I didnt realize how bad it was to overlap bleach (like, bleach already white hair again) so after a while my hair just started snapping. After a while I decided to dye it red but it was so damaged that it just didnt take to my hair, and I had a huge strip of light brown hair where the rest was red.

I have to preface this also by saying if your hair is just dry (e.g. not breaking) then this wont help at all. It's for hair that's actually splitting apart and snapping and breaking and falling out - not hair that just doesnt feel nice. It'll probably make that worse.

So what you do basically is just slather it on to dry hair, until it's all soaking. It's quite runny and drippy, and also doesnt smell very nice, but oh well. Then you blow-dry it until it dries hard. All your hair will feel like a rock, like dried hair gel. DO NOT TRY TO BRUSH IT OR BEND IT OR TOUCH IT WHILE ITS LIKE THIS. It'll just break off. Once it's all dry, go into the shower and just let the water rinse it away (dont touch it!). After it's all rinsed off, use a really good conditioning mask (protein dries out the hair, so you need to put moisture back in) and voila.

It totally repaired my hair. I could pull whole strands out when it was wet, now hardly any of my hair falls out and it feels SO much nicer. I also was able to dye it and the dye took really well to my hair! When my hair is dry, none pulls out or falls out, and when it's damp a bit does come out, but way less. It seriously is amazing. I totally 100% recommend this if your hair is damaged like mine.

My hair now:

Thanks for this. It would have been a useful product before I had to get the chop. q: But this is really useful to know.

I have to reinforce what emilysparrow says here - Aphogee's Protein Treatment is really only designed for truly damaged and breaking/snapping hair (it's a favourite of girls with Afro-Caribbean type hair who've destroyed theirs utterly through relaxing and heat straightening), not hair that just feels dry or is slightly elastic when wet. If this is the case you are better off with less "hardcore" protein treatments such as those made by professional salon ranges - I personally use Joico's K-Pak range and it's very good for restoring moisture and smoothness to my processed hair. Other ranges such as Tigi, Goldwell and Redken also make some excellent deep conditioners and protein treatments: just be aware that Aphogee's product is somewhat of a different beast to these.

Yes. Thank you Typhoid. Especially because if your hair gets too much protein, it'll break off as well - so if your hair isnt already needing protein, this could actually cause your hair to break.

Exactly, emily, hopefully if we say it enough the Internet will listen.

Hmmm, so my hair is pretty damaged, not breaking off in extremes like emilysparrows was but it is over processed and not holding colour. i'm using directions fire red at the moment as i dont dare dye my hair back to dark brown with box dye.
My hair is also not really growing, i thnk more breaks off at the ends that grows at the roots...my roots are a couple of inches and the ends still have bleach on them even though i haven't bleached for over six months now.

Anyway, would aphogee be ok for this? I've also heard of protein fillers that improve condition of hair and help colour stick, I'm bored of having to dye my hair red every 4 days!

P.S. Tried it - Loved it. Though I think to get the full effect you have to use it 2 or 3 times. Its not completely repaired my hair to its formal state but its a MASSIVE improvement! I accidentally pulled one of my hairs out with a hair clip (as you do) and thought i'd try seeing if the strand snapped and it was as strong as well...string, wouldn't even snap!

Less frizz too, more shiny! I just want to thank Emilysparrow as well for drawing my attention to it. I got it for Β£13 off ebay along with the balancing moisturizer and  its the best money i've spent i think. My hair was depressing me πŸ™

So to everyone with snapping off hair - you should really REALLY invest in this x

Would love to give this a bash, but want to know if it's damaged enough for this to be helpful rather than hindering.
I've attached an image of the amount of breaking I get just from running a comb through my hair once (which is kind of gross but a decent indicator of hair health I guess) could someone let me know if they reckon this is would help or hurt?

i haven't used it...but i don't think there's enough damage in your hair to make it beneficial. your hair doesn't look to bad to be honest. you could try a protein treatment, but i don't think you'd benefit from it to much.

but correct me if im wrong guys =D

I think maybe Anna you should pop down to your local salon and ask them for some advice. They can at least see your hair close up and assess the damage. As you're only asking about hair conditioning you would only be there a minute or two so you won't get charged for their time.
