I've posted this as a review as a) I don't have any pics of how it's turned out yet, and b) it is more of a review really.
I was really excited to try the Adore blacks as I've been searching for a semi black for my roots that isn't green based for ages, and although the Manic Panic Raven Black doesn't seem to be as green based as the Directions Ebony, my hair really doesn't get on with Manic Panic at all since they changed to the cream formula. So I got some Adore jet black and Adore blue black, and did a 50/50 mix of them. Sadly, I have to say I'm really not that impressed. What I will say is that it is very easy to use, runnier than the standard veggie dyes, but I find this makes it easier to apply, and smells much nicer too.
Unfortunately, even after leaving it on for a good 4 hours and sitting with a rather fetching carrier bag arrangement on my head with my dreads poking out the back, it hasn't done a particularly good job. My roots are dark, but they were dark brown to begin with anyway. I was hoping for jet black. And it hasn't done a very good job on the greys either. However, this could be because my roots were completely unprocessed, so it may work better on bleached or bleach bathed hair. But for me, if I'm going to put a peroxide based product on my hair anyway, I may as well stick to the black permanent box dyes or look for a semi black box dye, as I'd rather do the whole lot (bleach and colour) in one go, instead of faffing about with bleach baths then veggie dyes on my roots. It's an absolute pain to bleach/dye my roots with dreads anyway, and I really don't want to add a step to the process!
But the other side of the coin is that those of you who know that my long term hair plans to eventually go back to red is what I want to get to in the end, will know that one of the reasons I was looking for a veggie black is to make it easier to remove the black colour from my dreads when I come to start my red plans. So now I have the decision of do I put up with a disappointing black result (ie: not black, just darkish brown) in the meantime, or do I go with a permanent or semi box dye and put up with more hassle to remove the black when I come to do the red?
i'm in the same position as you kinda! have been my hair nicely (sulphate free-shampoo, cone-free conditioner, weekly intense condtioner, no heat) and haven't dyed in 2 months - but i really need to top up my colour, because at the moment i have dark brown hair with dark blondey roots and hints of ginger throughout :L but i really don't want to use a box dye because i've been doing so well and also, like you, i wanna remove the brown and go a bright colour in a while. thought adore's darkest brown would be ideal, but maybe it's not worth buying it if it doesn't stick to virgin roots :/
After a couple of washes now, I am still quite disappointed with this dye. It has completely disappeared from my hair altogether. Not even a trace of black remains, not even on my greys. Since I have dreads and only wash my hair once every two weeks or so, it has been literally two washes since I dyed the roots, and not a trace remains. I am considering changing my colour placements soon and having red at the top with black on the ends, so I may use the rest of the adore to do the ends black. Since the ends are already bleached and coloured, hopefully it will stick better on the ends.
I noticed that the sticking power definitely decreases drastically on unbleached hair. I dyed my bleached hair pink rose at the same time i did my bf's unbleached hair with blue/black and whilst his did last a good 8 weeks, mine was 3 months with no fade.
I'm sorry for bumping an old thread, but I was searching for info on semi blacks because I'm fairly sure I am allergic to PPD. π I have dyed the lower 2/3rds of my hair permanent black twice now, and both times I had a reaction (redness on my scalp, itching, large bumps on my scalp at the base of my neck that are not acne/pustular but last for several days). It was a mild reaction, but a reaction nonetheless and I don't want to take my chances on the next time being severe. π So, now I am trying to figure out what to do with my hair as I really like the black, tbh, with the bright colours on the top.
My hair is naturally a very dark mousy ash brown. If I do a bleach bath on my roots when I'm touching up my colour on the top, they will likely go a medium ginger. I don't mind the upkeep with black as I'm already maintaining the semipermanent colour on the top, but I'm not sure which black to go for? I don't think green would suit me at all, so I don't know if Ebony is the right choice? I'm thinking probably a blue-based black since I'll have a ginger base the fade will hopefully be more purple... or am I way off base in that line of thinking?
I was hoping the Adore line of blacks would be the solution but Mindi's review has me feeling sad. I'd like to be as close to a permanent black as possible but I'm not finding much that sounds promising. π I don't mind doing a bleach bath on my roots to help the colour last longer as I'll be lightening my roots for touching up the top colour anyhow.
Does anyone have a recommendation, or am I going to have to abandon my hope of keeping the black altogether now?
Thanks in advance!
From what others have said about Adore, I'd imagine that if you're planning on bleach bathing your hair first anyway, that you'd have alot more success with the blacks. My review was based on using Adore over completely unprocessed, virgin hair, and as with all semis, they work best on processed hair.
Cheers for the reply, Mindi. π The Adore dyes are inexpensive enough, perhaps I'll just order a bottle of both the Blue Black and the Black Velvet and play around with them. I'll be ready to retouch my roots here in a couple of weeks, so I'll post some results then.
You're welcome! π
I've actually gone back to black myself, and am using a salon permanent blue-black colour, which uses a peroxide developer (I'm using a very low 10vol), and I'm planning on topping up in between dyes with a mixture of Adore blue-black and Directions Midnight blue to intensify the blue tones. I'm also planning on using the salon permanent dye on just my roots to avoid overprocessing the lengths, and just letting the semis top up the colour on the lengths (when my hair actually grows out to any sort of length, that is! LOL!) I too shall post some pics and/or reviews of how I get on with Adore over processed hair.
definately do a bleach bath, just to open up the cuticle. (10-20vol max needed)
I re did my boyfriends hair with the blue black( after dying it red for Comic Relief ) and it has lasted much longer. I would put a picture of it but it looks very purple in photos because we didnt have time to fade his poppy red base; but apart from that the dye is holding well even with his anti dandruff shampoo.
I'd be happy to hear how about your results, Minid! π
Thanks for the info as well, puerkz! π
I'd much rather have the simplicity and convenience of the salon permanent black. I've been using Joico Vero K-Pak in Black with a salon quality 10vol developer. I just can't ignore the reaction I've experienced on my scalp. I have so many other skin issues already (lots of eczema), I don't need to have a full on severe allergic reaction! :'(
My boyfriend is the same which is why i got him the adore dye. His eczema flared up with the bleach when we did the red so i didnt want to expose him to more chemicals.
