Hi all ^^ I just finished the process of lightening up my hair and re-dyeing a lighter colour blue. To give you a quick history, I had previously used Midnight Blue by Punky Colours, Blue Velvet, and then Blue Mayhem by SFX. I found all of them to be a little darker than I was going for, so decided so re-bleach my hair - which was dark and not fading no matter what I tried - and try Blue Haired Freak (which I've been told is the lightest of the SFX blues).
My friend helped me bleach out my hair. My roots were easy, but the parts that had already been bleached a couple of times were still clinging to their green colour even after I'd been fading with dandruff shampoo for weeks. Also, the part that was green hadn't been bleached in months. Everything except my roots were in mediocre condition, and my friend recommended I give up on trying to get all of the colour our, and just focus on making sure all my root bleaches were as light as possible in the future. I then used Manic Panic Amplfied Virgin Snow toner to tone my roots. Then after shampooing twice to get the toner out, I applied Blue Haired Freak, left it a few hours, and here is the result:
I'm extremely pleased with the colour, it is exactly the blue I was going for! The only problem is, certain parts of my hair haven't taken the colour at all. It's hard to see from this picture but it's the best I could get:
I noticed while putting the dye into my hair, it seemed to lather white which I haven't encountered when applying any of the other SFX blues. Also, when rinsing the dye out, NO colour came out when I was just applying water before shampooing - which is CRAZY because I'm usually covered in blue by that point! While shampooing a tiny bit of colour came out, but mostly just lightly tinted shampoo foam. I noticed very, very little colour going down the drain. (I applied an entire bottle, which I always have done). I also notice that the dye took to my roots much better than the rest of my hair, which alternates between silver, blonde and green (very sexy, I know! :p)
So some questions I have - would love to hear some opinion:
1. Is this normal with Blue Haired Freak? I know it's a lighter colour, and some of the gallery photos of people with BHF seem kind of faded, but I would have expected the dye to at least take before fading.
2. I have never used toner before dyeing my hair, so I was wondering if this had to do with it, even though I rinsed it twice with dandruff shampoo before applying the dye. But I'm thinking that might not be it, as my roots took the colour very well and that's where I applied most of the toner. The white foaming/very little colour rinsing out made me wonder if the toner had something to do with it though..
3. Perhaps my hair (excepting my roots) is in such bad condition it is not sucking the dye up? I'm planning on getting some of that Joico reconstructor I've heard about on here tomorrow, and trying to get my hair back in good condition before re-dyeing, and hopefully if this is what the problem is, that will help.
Thanks for reading my long-winded post!!
The second pic doesn't do justice to the amount of green/blonde that is in my hair...overall I'm super pleased with the colour though, and will probably be sticking with it once I figure out why a lot of my hair didn't seem to absorb it.
I had the same with blue haired freak - roots taking on it well and the other half from the middle not so, I never tried that again since if faded without 4-5 washes pretty much completely.
Thanks for the feedback - I think I'll go back to Blue Mayhem and just leave it on 30 mins so it doesn't get too dark as others have suggested π
good luck :)!
