I went to a school where dying your hair unnatural colours wasn't allowed so i haven't been able to dye my hair since i was 11. I have dyed my hair red and black using box dyes from tesco, and those were my first times dying all of my hair. When I was younger my mum would use a Directions dye to do strips once a year.Once in the summer holidays  i dyed the underneaths of my hair pink but it didn't come out and i got into a lot of trouble so knew i couldn't get away with doing it during the holidays. Thats my hair dying history and now after a long long wait I dyed my hair!!! I did the bottom and front bit atlantic blue ny Directions and the middle bit Lagoon blue by Directions and the top bit Fishbowl by Special Effects i'm pleased with how it turned out unfortunately i didn't take good pics before it started fading i dyed it 6 days ago today. OKAY i found pictures of me at prom, the day i dyed it, and i chose the ones that showed of my hair so excuse my face. Okay so i can't upload photo's because they're JPEG not JPG and i haven't made 30 posts yet because i'm quite so i can't link to the video i made πŸ™ My youtube is Rainiepie if you want to find it but it's taking forever to upload though so i don't know when it'll be done :/
*Update*
So thanks to a very lovely person πŸ™‚ the video is below and I will now and try uploading photos from the day i dyed it

Hope your cold is doing better and love the blue!

Hey Rainiepie, I'm glad you are now allowed to dye or hair without having to worry about school, I was similar to that as my school also wouldn't accept unnatural colours (red was OK though :S).
Also if the blue hair you are describing is in your profile picture it looks great!!
Really suits you πŸ™‚

and welcome to the forum!

So you didn't wash your hair before dying and dyed on dirty hair? Or your bleached then dyed?

It looks really pretty though πŸ™‚

thank you everyone i'm really glad to have such a response :D, and thank you my cold did get better and thanks for uploading the video πŸ™‚ i'll try the picture thing now.I bleached my hair a couple of times in January and that was it, and then dyed on dirty hair last week. I didn't want to panic my hair and i heard some people said dye it on unwashed and others said washed I wasn't really sure what to do.

Ah :).  This explains why it washed out so quickly.

Peroxide based dyes (such as permanents and demis) and bleach should go on unwashed hair, as the natural oils helps protect the scalp and hair from the damage the peroxide causes.  Veggie based semis should go onto clean, unconditioned hair, as the natural oils or any product creates a barrier.  These dyes work as stains, so the closest your hair is to a raw state, the more your actual hair gets stained.  Product or natural oils on your hair will end up with the product/oil absorbing most of the dye and washing off the next time you clean your hair.  Also, because there is no peroxide to lift the cuticle (it does more than that, but anyway), it will wash off the roots a LOT faster than it will on already processed hair.  This is why a lot of us do a quick bleach bath or low-volume bleach on the roots once every few months.  It's not always necessary, but the alternative is dying once every couple of weeks to keep the colour on.

Also, since veggie dyes have no peroxide or ammonia in them, they are safe to leave on for hours on end.  I know you were in a rush so that wasn't possible this time, but if you set aside a day and let the dye set for at least two hours (some of our members leave it on overnight), you'll end up with a richer colour that lasts longer πŸ™‚

thank you!! I'll keep all of that in mind next time and after i'm finished with blue hair and change colour i'll defiantly try the quick bleach bath before. Because i'm a natural light blond when I update roots I don't need to bleach it , only when i'm changing colour.:D

Maybe what you read was some people put it on dry hair and some wet? I put it on towel dried hair as I find I get it more even coverage. But most put it on freshly washed but not conditioned hair that is dry.
