Had you already given up going to a salon? My stylist is good and I want to learn to do my own but she is so the type who will give me crap for it if I go back to her after.

No - I knew I could do it safer. My hairdresser now admits I know more than her and wouldnt do anything unless i told her exactly what to do lol

Yes, after they double processed it during one visit and in the end I had to cut off half of my hair because it was extremely dry and knotty. Also, they weren't honest. Now I know my hair couldn't be the platinum in one go but they claimed it could and of course I left the salon not even close to the hair I wanted but all patchy and yuk.
I've visit several salons over the years, from budget to very expensive, and I hardly ever got what I wanted, even 'normal' dye jobs were patchy parts not even coloured at all, and of course I paid quite the amount of money.

After that I never bleached it completely till a few weeks a go. I first read a lot here and it's in way better condition.  I'm not the best but it's way better than my salon experiences.

Yeah, pretty much. I had a great stylist, my best friend from cosmetology school but he passed away + I wanted allover highlights in foils which I knew I couldn't do myself. I stupidly trusted my boss, the owner of the ritziest, most expensive salon in the area (who I later found out wasn't even licensed yet, totally illegal, and she totally fried my hair to wet cottony mush that was clumping off - I  couldn't even try to detangle it because it would just mush off in my hands. She used 50 when I told her to use 20 + 30. After that I was going to do absolutely everything myself + further my knowledge about hair on my own. Classes + hair shows I'd went to with the top stylists in the industry were using 40 for basically every bleach + it was ridiculous. So many stylists out there are complacent with their education, or when they do go for classes they're being fed info that would fry anyone's hair. It's like the color result is way more important than the integrity of the hair, and a lot of stylists are afraid to take color changes in steps vs just one day. Idk, unless you're able to find a good stylist that understands these things, I really think it's best to just educate yourself and do it yourself. That's why I came on here in the first place. I didn't really know anything about semis other than what I was taught in cosmetology school - that they suck, they fade out right away, and your client will hate their hair after a week and hate you and never come back to you again. Oh, and that color removers are awful. I didn't trust anyone to attempt to take me to pink from dyed black, so came on here to figure out the safest way possible.

I initially wanted to go to a salon but after getting a few consultations done I gave up. Could not find someone I was comfortable with. I did a lot of research before hand so I knew what should be done. I did not want a 40 vol bleach, I did not want to be highlighted repeatedly to "gradually lighten" and I did not want to use Magicontrast which one girl insisted on since "semi dyes are crap".

I hate the gradually lighten thing. The first time I had light blonde highlights I wanted that but after a few months I wanted to just go bleach blonde all over and I faced resistance for months. Most salons try to talk you into highlights instead but it never looks the same and it's much harder to turn you full blonde when you've had bleach highlights unless they are very subtle. And if you go to a new salon with highlights and say bleach me all over they will often turn you away altogether if you won't settle for foils.

I've never consciously decided not to go to a salon for my colour I just never seem to have time to get to a salon for them to do it! I am forcing myself to go for trims cuse of the whole growing thing but that doesn't take as much time. I'm usually doing a million things when I'm doing my hair at home (coursework/tidying/doggy training/trying to stay awake) haha, these things can't be done sat in a salon chair being offered weak cups of tea πŸ˜›
