What strength developer?

OK - apologies if this is a really basic question.  Before I found this site I'd never thought of the idea of buying my own bleaching components - I've only every used box bleach kits before, and if I'm honest always automatically gone for the strongest one available.  I know better now!  (Although tbh I've always got away with it somehow...)

So - I'm trying to find some bleaching products online, and looking at what's out there, how do I choose what strength developer to go for?  I have fine hair, natural colour is dark brown, and I'm using Rose Red at the moment (although thinking of switching to SFX virgin rose next time).  I'm also considering heading towards a real platinum blonde once I've had enough of faffing with transfer, fade etc in a few months!

So should I go for 20, 30 or 40 vol peroxide?  How do I tell what's best for my hair while still giving me the result I want?

Thanks lovely hair experty people!

Don't go for 40vol that's just too much.
I think with 1-2 BBs with 20 vol you should already get light enough for a red /pink. You only need a gingerish base for that. I'd say try with 20 and if it doesn't lighten enough go for either a full bleach or get 30 vol. It's always better going too low than too high and risking frying πŸ™‚

For Platinum you might need a lot more bleaching though...

Please never use 40vol, it's horribly strong stuff.

I also have dark brown hair, albeit mine is quite thick and I use 30vol to bleach in my roots for nuclear red.

I personally think a 20vol bleach bath might not lift you enough for that colour, it depends how soon you want to change colour. If you are happy to gradually lift then i'd suggest a 30vol bleach bath until it's light enough but if I'm honest, I prefer to just full bleach my natural colour as it can be quite hard to lift.

Thanks folks.  I've ordered 30vol today, plus a tub of coconut oil!  I'll go carefully.... πŸ˜€

I think buying the 30 was a good idea. You can test it out and dilute it too with shampoo to make is 10-20 vol to see what works best for you. Some bleaches lift better than others also and you can get away with using a lesser vol, so IMO 30 is good to have around because you can dilute it to match your needs πŸ™‚
