What products do I need?

Hello! I've been trying to read and educate myself in preparation for attempting to lighten my hair at home. My current situation is that I have some pretty haphazard balyage highlights that, even after going back to the stylist for another toner session, are way warmer than I want. She suggested that it's because the highlights are next to my natural hair color which I /think/ is a fairly warm 5-6 (lightish brown with a lot of red in the sun).

A few years ago I was able to achieve the pale, creamy, cool blonde that I really want but it required going to several different stylists and putting highlights on top of highlights. So I'm wondering if there's something I can purchase to give myself an all-over lightening at home, on top of the highlights that are already there which I'm hoping will give the final result some nice dimension.

I gather that I'll need a combination of hair dyes, toners, and developers but I'm at a loss as to which colors and levels to use. Appreciate any and all advice!

It is not advisable to bleach/lighten over already lightened hair as it is too damaging for your hair. I would recommend using a purple shampoo or a toner (the ones that dont require developer) to remove the brassy tones from your balayage area. you can apply it and leave it on for some time, usually i leave it on for about 10 to 15 minutes depending on how toned you want it. Some people leave it on for up to 30 minutes. Then rinse and condition as normal.

I've tried shimmering lights for 20 minutes, but I really think the balayaged area needs to be lightened more. It's orange, not brassy, so based on what I've read I'm not sure toner or blue/purple shampoo alone would work. It's been over a month since the balayage. I'm also just not really loving the dark underneath. Could I do something like leave the leave the color on for less time on the hair that is already lightened, to reduce the chance of further damage?

Its hard to tell what you should do next, could you possibly post a picture so we can see just how dark it is. I agree with puerkz, you usually don't want to bleach over already lightened hair, but if its been over a month since it happened, then I would think you could do a bleach bath, if it truly does need to be lightened further, they are less damaging and you can repeat in a week if needed. There is a great tutorial on here about a bleach bath. But we really can't give sound advice without a picture of how dark your hair currently is.
