I went to Sally's today and looked through their colour books but couldn't decide what colour this would be. Maybe a medium gold-blonde, about level 8? (I didn't have the picture with me!) I'm unsure what it means for a colour to be gold, I'm assuming it's a warm colour though. I also saw some that were called pearl. My haircolour now is a light slightly reddish brown, do you think I could achieve this with a permanent dye?
I would call that a neutral level 7, with lighter ends. (although it could look entirely different on my monitor than yours) Is your hair now natural rather than dyed? Tint won't lift tint.
You can alter the amount of lift a permanent dye gives by selecting higher vol peroxide and using a higher ratio of peroxide to tint. What level would you describe your hair as now? You may need a cooler violet based dye to counteract the red.
I'd say I'm somewhere between 6 and 7, the front sides of my hair are always a bit darker than the back. My hair is dyed, since January I've been babying it after a botched highlighting attempt. Most of that has grown out or been cut out, but it scared me so much since then I've only used permanent colour once using 10 volume and Demi colour using activators at an even lower peroxide a couple times. The rest of the tine was using Adore colours. Last colour I used was Wella colour touch with colour activator in a level 7. It turned out really dark though but it's slowly fading. Now it's a light brown with a slight red /orangey tone. Before I do anything else to it I'm going to force fade it with either colour B4 or other methods. When I was at Sally's every colour I saw that seemed close to this had the word gold in it, I was wondering how gold will react to my base?? Is gold more of a yellow? If so I'm thinking my hair might turn more orangey but I just don't know. Those colours are so expensive and I need 3 tubes to cover my hair!
Look for a level 7 with A (ash) or V (violet) or BV (blue violet) in them. some brands just use numbers, and they vary between brands. A 7BV would be good for red toned hair to counteract the oranginess, but you will need to remove the old dye if you want to lighten to a 7. It may be cheaper to get it done at a salon, you could always go for a consultation and ask what products they would use.
Thanks so much, you know that's exactly what I was thinking to just go to a good salon and have them do it the first time. If I find a salon that uses the same colours I can buy at Sally's I can just buy the same colours then next time.
