Hi guys!
So this weekend I bleached my hair to ginger/yellow stage (my hair was a light brown but is SO stubborn, even after 60 mins of bleach!). I then added a toner (light ash Wella T18) which had a strong violet base and used a 20 vol developer with it. However my hair is still yellow and it's almost like it didn't take to the toner? Any ideas why this might have been? I left it on for the maximum time (over 30mins!) but it only sightly toned.
Can I do it again? Will this kill my hair? 😮 ::)
THANKS!
Toners aren't designed to lift, they are just for altering the tone on light blonde hair. Your hair was too dark for the colour in the toner to show.
Will this kill your hair? Yup, putting a 20 vol permanent dye over freshly bleached hair is a hell of a lot of processing. You will need to wait at least a month before using anything else that contains peroxide.
You can tone out the brassiness with violet shampoo/conditioners or violet direct dye diluted in conditioner.
Thanks so much! some questions for the future:
1) did I not take the initial bleaching far enough? Should it have been a pale yellow not an orange yellow? and then a toner would have had more of an effect?
2) If yes to the above, is it safe to leave it on for longer than 60 mins to get passed the ginger bleach stage? the box said no more than 60 mins but what if my hair takes 90 mins to get to that stage?
Never leave bleach on for longer than the time stated on the packet. It stops doing any lightening after about an hour but doesn't stop damaging.
Did you cover your head with some cling film or a bag? The bleach could have dried out and therefore stopped lightening. It is recommended to cover the hair and even blast it with a hair dryer for a minute or two to create more heat.
You need to be a pale yellow (inside of a banana colour) before the Wella Colour Charm toners will work. There are lots of reasons that your hair may not have lifted well; not enough product, product dried out, too low volume peroxide, poor quality or old products, etc. Did you do a strand test first?
Certain brands do work much better on certain hair types.
Great suggestions guys thanks!
I did do a strand test and it looked all right, however I did not cover it in cling film or a bag. Would this have helped? I would say that my hair was definitely not the color of a banana and was more ginger than that. Next time I bleach I will bag my head. So right not my hair is somewhat a mellow blonde/yellow and will try and balance it out with some violet/blue conditioner.
Do you guys know if leaving the violet/ blue conditioner on for a 30mins or so will help the affect?
Leaving it on for longer will make it work better. Also I cannot stress how much of a difference bagging your head will make. I never used to do it and often got patchy results with not enough lift, but since I started bothering it works so much better.
Good tip. Next time I bleach I will wrap my head fully. Im just worried as my hair seems so stubborn that if even after 60 mins of wrapped hair it is still only that ginger color not the yellow what to do?
It can be all about the bleach you use. They're not all created equal. What one are you using now and what country are you in?
BUT, the heat could be enough to fix the problem, it makes a big difference often.
I used the following product:

and here is my hair after using....
Did you try to bleach out another hair dye?
I had had another color in there before yes Wicked Pixie!
Ah, that is why it is so vibrantly orange! Using a colour remover prior to bleaching avoids getting those really bright orange tones from dark dyes. It also would have made the bleaching much easier, it is really hard to bleach out permanent colour. I assumed the light brown was your natural colour.
Anyway, use a colour remover now, it should take some of the orange out and will definitely help to make your next round of bleaching much more effective. I would also recommend straight bleach and peroxide (20 vol, no higher) next time rather than a high lift blonde.
Oh right! I had no idea that was what happens! So can I use a color remover now even though I bleached it and then toned it? Is it harsh on my hair? My color right now is ALMOST a lovely beige blonde, but I can still tell there is orange/yellow underneath if you know what I mean..!
