Toning advice *new photo update*

I began bleach bathing my hair initially to achieve a base for purple. I began with hair to the top of my butt that has been dyed red every 6 months for years. After 2 bleach baths it's now bright yellow on the top and fades to golden at the ends with a reddish tinge.

I did color remove as much as possible before bleaching, I think any remaining red is just stain. But the ends are fairly light so it's not bothering me.

I'm now thinking I like the blonde and want to try it out. However, making a toner myself with a purple semi and conditioner is not giving me a good toned result. In fact, tonight it dyed my roots pinkish violet  I'd like something in the ash blonde range like the attached photo.

What do I need to do to get there?

You can try fading out the pinky toner and trying again with a bluer one.  A purple based blue like Directions Neon blue or SFX Blue Velvet is best for taking out orange tones and adding a silver tint.
However, the shade of blonde in the pic is not going to be achievable over a yellow/gold base. To cover the amount of warm tones you have you will have to go for a darker shade if you want ash, and tbh you may have to settle for a neutral, rather than a cool shade over your ends.
If your hair is in good enough condition a permanent dye in a light ash (blue/violet based) may get you close, if a permanent would be too much for your hair try a demi (deposit only) with peroxide lower than 10 vol in a shade that is the same or darker than your current colour, as these don't lift.
The hair in the pic (I am guessing) would have been bleached to a very light blonde before toning with a permanent ash toner. To get light ash shades you need to bleach past any warm tones.
The other option (if your hair is damaged) would be blue/violet based ash direct dyes such as Wella Colour fresh.
Alexia has had great success using a grey direct dye diluted to tone her blonde (Nirvel artx Nutre Colour, there is a thread about it on here if you search) Pravana silver would be another option.

I know you've described your current colour, but could you post a picture?  It would help us see where you currently are vs where you want to be.  You might need a more blue toner for the ends.  The easiest way to determine what shade you need is to put a photo of your hair in negative with a photo editing programme, as toning is all about balancing colour from opposite ends of the colour wheel.  Even then, you probably won't get a very pale ash blonde with staining in your hair.

EDIT:  Wicked Pixie beat me to it and was far more eloquent and detailed than I!

If I did go along with a demi permanent ash color, when could I use it? Or even a permanent one? I did a bleach bath, k pak and deep conditioner today. My hair overall is in ok condition. I tend to baby it, but I don't want to over process by any means. My last BB was a week ago.

I'll try to get a pic in a minute. I'm ok with a darker ash or neutral even. And I'm still thinking of purple. I just font feel ready to make the leap yet.

I feel like it looks warmer in the picture than it is. But either way. I want to neutralize that warmth for sure.

It is much darker than i thought you meant. If you want blonde you are going to have to bleach, or continue to bleach bath. How many colour removers have you used and what colour was it before you dyed it red?

The picture is in poor lighting, but that's the gist. Orangey red and the top is yellow and pink but I didn't get it photographed well.

I used one color remover because they're hard to get here (stationed in Japan) and lots of clarifying washes, and my natural hair is a medium brown. But it hasn't been natural... God, since I was 12. I've been coloring it red forever now.

I'm really nervous to try another BB. So far the entire week after my last one my hair felt good, and I used cone free conditioner. It feels fine now, too, but I know it needs time.

Well if it were my hair, i would use a couple more colour removers before attempting to lighten further, especially if you want ash tones.
Try toning with blue in the meantime, but it is likely to look brownish rather than blonde.

I second the colour removers, it often needs more than one go before it has worked fully.

Ok thank you. I'll try to get my hands on some. It's really hard to come by in this area of Japan, unfortunately. And Amazon won't ship it here.  ::) I don't think I want to process it more either way. It feels so much stiffer on the ends this morning.
I'm going to try using a blue conditioning toner like you guys said after my son runs to school, and give it a quick trim.

Thank you for the tips and time.

I used blue semi in conditioner this morning then scoured my BX and a Japanese drug store for color lifter or even some kind of toner to apply like shampoo. Nothing.

This is what I'm working with now. Will my original plan of purple work over this? Or will I need another bleach bath in a week or two? It's a blue based purple I was looking at.

A good dark  purple will cover that, what brand/shade were you planning to use?
I always found blue purples tricky over darker bases with my own hair, I get a lot of black/brown and sludgey grey tones, so I only do blues and purples over a light blonde base. Other people don't have this issue though, so try a strand test with your chosen purple over the darkest part of your hair.
