Still won't tone!?

Hello!

So I wrote recently about my trouble I had toning my hair and it is still not turning out as it should. I bleach my hair to a the level desired and then that's when the trouble begins. I then try a demi permanent ash blonde on top of it and and get no real change. Then I try a permanent... no real change again. Then I try a toner and still don't get any real change. The ONLY thing that changes it is when I mix up some purple shampoo (manic panic combo!) and this cancels out the warmth. This is great but I would love to be able to actually select the dye and not rely on purple shampoo to get the ash I want.

Why oh WHY are all the other wonderful toners and dyes not working?! Surely getting from mousy brown to ash blonde can't be this hard?!

It's hard to say what's wrong without a picture and without knowing your hair history. If I had to guess I'd say that either your hair is not light enough to be affected by the permanent colors/ toner or that your hair is overprocessed and won't take those dyes properly. IMO, since the shampoo/ dye combo seems to work I'd suggest keeping with that but perhaps use a better semi-permanent dye to achieve your color. That way you can customize it to the shade you want and don't have to worry about it damaging your hair.

Thanks for this! My hair might indeed be over processed as I do bleach a lot as I am always having it cut! Could you recommend any good semi's out there?

Thanks again  ;D ;D ;D

Special Effects, Directions, Punky Colour, and Pravana are good. You will probably need a violet color; I'd suggest buying a separate blue and purple and mix your own so you can customize your color (for example, if your hair is more orange-ish, you'll need more blue). I wouldn't buy any of their toners as they are generally too weakly pigmented and not cost-effective in the longrun. Also I'd avoid Directions Plum.
