Sick of brown hair :(

I'm 37, my hair has always been long, straight and brown - with the exception when I tried blonde for six months. The blonde washed my face colours out, I looked ill so went back brown.

I have a lot of grey. Each time my hairdresser colored it the grey would come through again after a few shampoos. So I went back to dying it myself from a box. I was getting the same results.

Was she using a wash out dye?

My mother in law is completely grey and you can see this on her roots, but the rest of what she's had dyed never goes back grey? Why would my hair not stay the colours it was dyed.

I asked my hairdresser if I could stay brown on top but have the ends lightened, not bright blonde but a lighter brown or dark blonde. She said no, it would go brassy as I've had dyed on it previously.

I feel like I'm stuck with hair I've had since I was a child only with grey strands in it now. It's really getting me down.

She didn't use a wash out. Because it was already blonde, therefore damaged, the dye won't stay in the hair well. Grey hair is also a lot more resistant to dye so it will have faded from there sooner, or it's just the nature of grey hair, it's lighter and so it shows up more. (Edit to add, even if this wasn't hair that was ever blonde, it's still likely it's damage from previous dyes)

Your mother in law's hair isn't your hair, everyone's hair behaves differently. She might have less damaged hair, she might natural have hair that takes up more dye or a cuticle that stays shut tighter so it doesn't let the dye escape. It's impossible to say really.

You might be able to go lighter on the ends, but there's definitely a possibility of it going brassy and won't be easy. It's a lot to type as well but if you're really willing to try doing a long, slightly complicated (it's not easy on your own) process I can help πŸ™‚

Could you try adding some red if you're really bored? Or even purples if you suit cool colours better. Doesn't have to be full on purple, just a hint.

Thank you for your reply.

I guess I'm just disappointed. I don't really fancy red or purple, or even going back blonde. I do like brown hair but much lighter and I just love the ombrΓ© look. I see so many people with fab colours and mine is just bland and littered with grey πŸ™
