I'm now thinking - I'm going to be bleaching again in a couple of weeks, to then add Virgin Rose over the top. As I have residues of too many colours (red, black) when I bleach it's still ginger on some bits. Would it be useful for me to use a toner first, between bleaching and adding the VR? Is it likely to make a difference?
If so, can you recommend any toner in particular? (Either colour or brand)
If it won't I won't bother but if you lovely experts think it's worth a go I may well give it a try. (Asking now cos I'm about to order bits so it would be useful to get them all at once!)
Virgin rose is very forgiving. I also don't think toning would help anyway!
Have you faded/used a colour remover? Bleach is always a last resort on previously dyed hair.
I would try fading what you have and using a color remover or two. I remember you said you liked my pink + I was not able to achieve this color on any parts of my hair that were (stained) ginger. I tried to tone it and add more purple/violet/blue and though it looked more purpley, it was much duller or it faded to a burgundy kinda pink. If you do want a cooler pink that won't fade reddish, VR is a great route to go, it is very cool, forgiving, and highly pigmented, but I would recommend getting your base to at least a gold, then use the VR. If you still want it more purpley/cooler you can 'tone' it with a violet or purple semi diluted in conditioner.
Thank you! I won't bother with toner then - I haven't before and wasn't really planning on it, but thought I'd check.
I hadn't thought about a colour remover - I was just thinking a really good fade (using the recipe shared on this site), then bleach (the roots need doing badly!) then VR. But maybe I'll colour remove again as well. I've got a couple of weeks before I do it anyway - I only did the rose red a week ago, so want to give it a bit of a chance to fade itself before I start attacking it!
Just out of interest - if I'm doing all of these (fade, colour remove, bleach, then colour), when is the best time to use the coconut oil? Between the colour remove and the bleach? Right at the beginning? Or after each step before the VR?
Coconut oil can help fade, especially when it's fresh, so use it whenever. π
