That's after a so called professional did it. That poor girl! She'll have that for the rest of her life and it must have been an excruciating thing to go through.

when i was in college (after a few years of box black dye) i decided i wanted to go platinum. knowing nothing about bleaching and the horrible things it does, i used several box bleach kits. all together i think i bleached my hair for like 4 hours straight. of course after the last rinse the majority of my hair came off in the towel. and thats also when i shaved my head for the first time. thankfully, i have had really short hair since i was like 15. and i'm kind of known now to just shave it all off if i brutalize it too much. i still tend to murder my hair from time to time but not nearly as bad or as often. i'm never really happy with my hair for long. people have learned not to expect the same hair color from me for long.

When i was 16/17 and at the peak of changing my hair (I was bleaching & dying 2/3 times a month)... I was pale pink and decided to go brown with a box dye. I was brown for a total of 3 days then bleached my hair with 40vol back to white and left the fringe brown. About a week later I decided I wanted a black/blue fringe and used schwarzkopf (BIG MISTAKE) to get this... when i washed it out the black ran into my platinum hair and it was horrendous, my hair was patchy grey/black/blue and instead of doing the smart thing and just waiting until it'd eventually washed out i decided to bleach  the blonde part AGAIN with 40vol (it was all i had) and my hair was an elasticy mess. Luckily my hair is like steel so I managed to get it healthy again pretty quickly but maaaaannnn I'm never doing that again, i couldnt even get a brush through it when it was wet it just felt like my hair had melted!

i also recently introduced my flatmate into bleaching/dying, her hair is very thin but she likes having pink hair...normally i do her roots for her and refrain from bleaching most of her hair but i went away for a week and she had to dye it brown for a christening, she waited until the pink had faded then dyed it brown the day before the christening... then the day after she wanted pink back. I told her to wait until i was there but she couldnt wait so i told her to use colour b4 on it (because i'd only bleached it 2 weeks ago) and then put pink over... turns out she thought colour b4 wouldnt be strong enough so she bleached it with 40vol (remember her hair is very thin) and her poor hair was falling out in clumps... she called me and burst into tears! I feel like it was partly my fault because i introduced it to her and she didnt know how strong bleach was and now shes lost most of her hair πŸ™

That's definitely not your fault. You told her what to do and she ignored it. If we felt bad everytime someone ignored our advice we'd be so miserable we'd never want to come out from under a rock lol

Thats true! But I feel like I should've explained the dangers to her more clearly... oh well, she's learnt her lesson now!

Just had my first bleaching mishap. You'd think I'd know by now?
After getting my hair into decentish condition after fair too much bleaching over the past few months, i'd only been doing the roots but I was quite a dark colour and fancied a cruella, so went out and bought a schwarzkopf blonde (knowing full well it's 40 vol), coconut oiled up and plopped it on my head. Only left it on for ten minutes or so cause my hair looked light enough, washed it and was under the illusion it was fine cause i'd coconut oiled. Finally washed it today after leaving it for a bit and the ends began snapping off. Super annoyed so i'm going to get a trim tomorrow. There goes my shoulder length hair D:

A case study on chemical burns caused by bleaching with 9% (30vol) peroxide.

There are pictures, so do not click if you are squeamish.

If the stories already shared in this thread didn't deter you, perhaps you'll think again after reading that link.

This has really freaked me out! What was it that the hairdresser did so wrong though? Sitting her under the hood dryer? How was it that her neck got so burnt if the hair was in a plastic cap away from her neck?

My guess, there was some bleach either her neck or the outside of the shower cap and no one noticed. It's also possible she was sat a little too close the the back of the dryer. Some have an extra concentration of hot air at the back as that's where the vents are, then the air circulates from there. Also, if she had her head tipped forward as she was texting, then her neck would be getting an extra blast. The skin on the back of the neck does seem pretty delicate as it just doesn't get the battered most areas get from daily life.

The shape of the burn has always made me suspect that though. It's kind of the shape of a cap sitting on the neck!

I think towards the end of the article they hypothesize that bleach collected in the bottom of the cap and was made more active by the heat of the hair dryer.

We surmise that the wound on the nape developed as a result of the highlighting mixture accumulating in the lowermost part of the plastic cap, as the girl was sitting upright, meaning that the amount of mixture - and therefore the concentration of ingredients (H2O2, persulphates, alkalizers) - was at its highest at that point. The local chemical reaction in the skin may have been intensified by the heat from the hood dryer, which was on for about 30 min.

This was with 30vol (9%) peroxide on the skin for 30 minutes.

When I worked in a salon, I was having red in sections. My boss had previous used the infrared heater previous and left it at highest setting (something no-one ever ever used) The bleach bubbled up and started pouring out the meche, I was fuming.

I've certainly overprocessed last month to go pink but its manageable! Have you ever burnt your hair by accident with a lighter? Yeah - theres a little bit that feels like that *rofl*
