Salon white hair? Who? What? Why?

Hey all! I am new to this site but I have been all over Boulder county looking for a good salon to "color" my hair white. I understand that it will take a few sessions to do so and I have been trying to find the most affordable way to do so. So here is what I have so far in no particular order: An Aveda salon; the stylist said she would do full highlights and tone my hair and that it could be done in possibly 3 sessions. I was very impressed with the staff and the facility and they were my favorite so far. Next I met with an Ulta salon and they said they would do relatively the same thing, so the only difference between these two is Redken vs Aveda? Does any one have any experience with these? The woman at Ulta said the stylist had a lot of experience with going blonde but I never did speak with the actual stylist... My final option is a local beauty school. They told me they would take a different approach. They would do a color correction using a Pravana color remover, look at the integrity of the hair, and move forward with multiple bleaching. The woman was very firm with that she would be constantly checking my hair to make sure she could keep bleaching because she was unsure of what my hair would do. I liked her approach, however she seamed much more hesitant while the Ulta and Aveda stylist didnt even bat an eye at my request. What do you all think???? Here is my hair now after 1 DIY bleach session and using Wella t18 toner to get black box dye out. Smeh.  πŸ™

Don't go to a salon.

Use a colour remover (which you should have done first). You can do this up to three times. Then you can look at either bleaching once a month or bleach bathing once a week.

Now, also accept it might not be possible. Hair dyed black is often stained to the point it will never turn white.

You will definitely need to do a round (or 3) with color remover to get that black dye out. Bleaching black dye often won't get past the ginger stage. Going white is not something that should be done quickly, ideally you'll wait at least a month between each bleach to check for damage (it can take that long to show).

I think the beauty school has the best approach, so long as the multiple bleachings are not done in quick succession.

I agree with the advice above of not going to a salon.
I have done the black dyed hair to white before. I did it slowly and used three boxes of color remover (color b4 extra strength) and was left with a yellow base, quite uneven as i had dyed my hair black with random strips of color in different places, changing every few months for 5 years. I then did bleach baths, once a week on the darker patches for 3 weeks and finished with one last all over bleach bath on the 4th week to get it to a pale yellow. I used purple shampoo after each bleach bath and then deep conditioned and used joico reconstructor each time. Back then. I didn't know about coconut oil.
The last time, i skipped the conditioner and just used the directions toner for about 30 minutes and had to reapply the next day to even it all out.

UPDATE  ;D

So I stopped by a different beauty school and they did a test strand on the spot, 2 minuets in it snapped. =[ On the up side they were not stupid and just put bleach all over my head so no additional damage was done. They did a toning on my orange hair, an intense moisture treatment, blowdry and style for $25! I was very pleased. They sent me home with a bottle of Redken Extreme Anti-Snap Leave in Treatment and told me to come back in two weeks and then they would do another test strand to see if my hair can handle the bleaching. Here is a picture.

I agree that you need to do at least one session of color remover, but if your hair is at the point of snapping two minutes into bleaching I'd wait to use it. If you are still set on going somewhere, go to the first school; they are at least knowledgeable enough to use a color remover and presumably to take any bleaching very slowly.

It does look quite nice, though; just remember that once your hair is damaged, it cannot be repaired, and many places don't care about the integrity of your hair, just giving you immediate gratification and getting their money.

If it's snapping within two mins, I don't think your hair will ever be ready for bleaching again until it's more grown out. As Piscine says, damaged hair is only masked, you can never permanently repair it.

Damaged hair wont tone white anyway so it's better to give it a long rest.

Thanks guys. =] Soooo....might be a crazy question...but because I cannot stand to have a hair color that exists in nature could I potentially color say the under parts of my bangs with a manic panic veg dye (or any other good dye that would wash out and not harm my hair) in purple and have that wash out when I am able to lighten up?

You could achieve a bright red, magenta or orange over that base or a dark purple. If you want a bright purple I would try a pink toned purple as anything blue toned is likely to go brown/muddy unless very dark.
