recommended processing time. is 10 minutes longer a big no-no?

i use a 20 vol developer with hi lift bleach powder & the powder states processing time should not exceed 40 minutes. however, it takes me 20 minutes to get it on the roots. i give the last section done a boost with my hairdryer for literally 1 minute or less on low & put on a showercap. i leave it on for a total of 50 minutes from when i first started applying. i have noticed some flyaways & a couple of random shorter pieces of hair, mostly at the back where i have trouble seeing when applying & probably get the bleach on the lengths where it shouldn't be! these don't bother me too much as i have had so called "professionals" do the same thing to me & they can actually see what they are doing better than i can! i always use coconut oil before bleaching. my hair is fine, naturally dark ash blonde/mousy & goes platinum with this method & a purple shampoo toner. i use the k pak reconstructor & a moroccan oil deep moisturising treatment conditioner afterwards.

my question is, is it a cardinal sin of bleaching to exceed the recommended development time on the product you are using? the only other info i can find here ( http://www.hairdyeforum.com/index.php?topic=7336.msg89326#msg89326 ) is regarding 30 vol developer & i am still within the recommended development time for my natural colour...

thanks for any input

Maybe use a 30 vol developer for less time? I'm not really sure though, other people here know much more about bleach πŸ™‚

Can't say we timed it to the minute in salon, we just checked the colour often!

As far as timing goes, there are three main rules:

1)  Don't let it lift to white.  Ever.  Once it hits the inside of a banana peel colour, wash it off.
2)  Check the lift every five minutes or so.  If it stops lifting, it's as light as it's going to get and leaving it on will just cause damage with no lift, so it's time to wash it off.
3)  If it burns, wash it off.

It's not recommended to leave it on for more than 60 minutes, or the manufacturer's time, but those are the three biggies.
