Question about highlighting hair and perm

I have long, very straight, very fine, very limp dark brown hair (that refuses to hold a curl).  I have been getting it highlighted to a golden blonde for about 20 years. Now I just get a partial highlight.  Recently someone with very similar hair said she had been getting hers permed once a year for years because it gives her hair a lot of volume, even though the curl from the perm falls.  This sounds like a great idea but I've been told you can't mix perms with bleach.  I don't look good with dark hair, it just washes me out, what colors of highlight will work that are not bleach?  Can I get a dark blonde without bleach?

Well, I've not thought about perms since the late 80s, but I don't think they've changed all that much since then.

You can have them both done, but it's not really the best idea if your hair is already fine. The finer hair is, the more likely it is to break with over processing and perms are pretty harsh.

There isn't much difference between bleach and blonde dyes though in terms of damage. Both lighten hair by the same amount which causes the same amount of damage, unless you leave it a lot darker and even then there's damage caused.

If you went to a salon that uses Olaplex, you might be ok. It's an additive used to help prevent breaking of and rebuild bonds as the processes are working. Still, I wouldn't advise it personally.

Perming bleached hair is generally a bad idea. Anything that lightens hair is bleaching it.
It may be possible with Olaplex, but you are still really pushing the boundaries of how much processing a hair can take

You can't perm bleached hair, the permanent bonds are weakened and there aren't enough left. Highlights are likely to snap since they are multi-processed, and even with single process bleach the curl would be loose and fall out quite soon. I think even Olaplex can't help with that. It can be used instead of neutralising solution for perming though.

I have seen high lift hair that was processed with 12% hold a curl for months after digital perming. If your hair is dark brown to begin with, you could probably get a mid to light brown with high lift tints. I don't have any idea how well a traditional cold perm would work, so you could probably only do this if you grow out your existing highlights, you like the colour achievable with high lift, and you have access to a hairdresser that can do a digital perm.

I would suggest rollers and a hair dryer hood for adding volume. Put the rollers on wet hair, and dry your hair in one of those hoods that has a hair dryer attachment. There are some tips and instructions on Scott Cornwall's blog for this.

Oh, cold perms do work. They even work on heavily bleached hair. I know because I was doing them back in the late 80s! It wasn't pretty and hair felt like c**p, but it worked. It was the fashion in the late 80s to have platinum blonde, very curly hair.
