Quest for platinum hair!

Hello all,

I was hoping to get some advice on how to progress with my aspirations to become platinum blonde.

I've always been a natural brunette and never dyed my hair in any way, shape or form up until last Friday (4th) when I went to my local salon and told them what I'd like. Being a complete novice at this, I did everything wrong in the run up.. washed my hair the night before and didn't put any sort of conditioning barrier on beforehand (lesson learned..!). Anyway, the stylist went ahead and bleached my hair over the course of an hour or so, it went a very light blonde with some slightly darker bits in the length, but she explained that she couldn't do any more on that occasion and to leave it a few weeks for another round of bleaching.

I like the color as it is but it's not platinum and I'm desperate to get it how I want it, but my query is do I wait a few weeks and then go back, or can I bleach it myself in the mean time? Impatient as I am, I tried one of the Wella Color Fresh toners and washed it the other day in a violet shampoo. It's definitely gone lighter but still not where I want it to be. My hair luckily still feels soft and in better condition than it should be for my ignorance, but I'm wondering what would be best? Shall I just let it recover for a few weeks now and just take good care of it or should I try lightening it again myself sooner as it still feels okay?

Have attached a pic to show color although my photography skills are shocking.. sorry lol xox

Ideally you want to wait about a month before lightening further. Whether you go back to the salon or DIY is entirely up to you, but the fact that your stylist has given you good advice so far makes me think she knows what she is doing.. By going blonde slowly, in gradual stages your hair will be in much better condition. The full extent of the damage from bleaching won't show up for about a month, which is why rushing and repeating a process too soon can lead to fried hair.
Keep using the violet toners, they will keep the brassiness at bay until you are ready to bleach again.

Thank you so much for the advice and reply.

Just wondering if it would be a good idea using the MP virgin snow toner as this has been recommended by a friend. Could this give me the platinum colour or would I definitely need another bleach in a month's time? Xox

I don't think Virgin snow would do much, your hair is too dark to tone to white. It needs to be a creamy colour like the inside of a banana. You can make a slightly stronger toner by diluting a violet dye, it will take out the yellow and make your blonde a cooler tone. It depends on your definition of platinum really, with the right toner you can get a much cooler, ashier shade of blonde that might be light enough for you. If you are thinking of a Gwen Stefani type of platinum you will need to lighten further.

Update

Hi all, have decided to post again on this original post I made as there is a picture on here for reference.

It's been exactly a month since I last had my hair professionally lightened (went from natural very dark brown to lightest blonde I could do in one sitting). My end goal is the platinum white blonde (gwen stefani-like) and so now it's been hopefully sufficient time I'm ready to bleach again.

My colour now is like a golden/yellow blonde though not quite at the banana peel hue needed for a toner to be effective. I'm thinking of doing it myself so I can adopt the coconut oil technique as well and keep my hair as good as I can. Please could I get some advice on what product(s) to use and how to mix? I've read a few other posts that mentions vols and percentages but am not sure what I'd be best using? My hair is still the same colour as the above pic but the roots are already dark again.

Would I apply the bleach all over my head and leave for an hour? or just the roots and then the lengths? Also, I have MP's Virgin Snow, would this be ok to apply once the bleaching is done to achieve the white/platinum end colour?

Thanks in advance x

You normally apply bleach to the ends before the roots (as the roots are closest to the scalp they lift faster as they get warmer than the ends) but as your roots are darker you might want to apply to the whole head?

Bleach comes in different strengths - 10 vol, 20 vol, 30 vol and 40 vol. Not many people on here will use anything stronger than 30 vol as 40 vol has really damaged peoples hair, even used in a bleach bath. The strength of the bleach dictates the amount of lift you will get (and of course the higher the lift the more damage) which one you go for depends on how dark your roots are, if they're dark dark brown then maybe 30 vol. The percentages just relate to the strength too - 30 vol is 9% peroxide, 20 vol is 6% and so on.

You can buy peroxide and bleach powder from hairdressing shops, Boots etc in my experience only stock 40 vol or occasionally 30 vol (my hair is mid brown so I only use 20 vol...it's no surprise how many bleaching accidents there are when high street shops only stock stupidly strong bleach!)

Just a word on 'leave it on for an hour'. You actually need to keep an eye on how it looks, and rinse it off when it looks right - although not leaving it in for longer than an hour (or stated length of time on the pack.

You also should probably just do a bleach bath rather than full strength bleaching.

You need to do a strand test. This is the only way of knowing for certain how well your hair will lift and how long to leave the bleach on.
You could soak your hair in coconut oil and then go to the salon, just tell your colourist that you are planning to beforehand.

Thank you all for the replies, they are super helpful as always and very much appreciated.

One last couple of things though that I wanted to check;

Is it safe to spot-highlight certain parts if the rest has lifted to the desired colour? like for instance a few random strands are darker yellow, whereas majority is banana shade. How long til I can reapply bleach to lift these areas again?

Also, as roots come through pretty quick with me, do you still need to wait another month between lightening roots again as its still bleach I'd be using? Tia x

Ok so this is the result from today's endeavor.

Actually quite pleased with the result as my local hair supply store was closed so couldn't purchase asny standalone bleach and developer, so ended up tweaking a box dye. Used coconut oil beforehand though for a few hours which I think helped massively, hair feels soft and in way better condition that my first uneducated foray in to the blonde domain a month ago.  I put some of the MP virgin snow over it afterwards and was left with the below result; it looks less yellow than the picture (crap lighting sorry) and it's come out ultra pale all over. Just wondering now if the next best step would be a bleach bath in a couple of weeks time to achieve the full platinum effect? Thanks in advance and for all the help so far.

It's looking good!  You should leave a month after full bleaches before doing any further processing, so I'd give it a month's time and then bleach bathe to get out any remaining darker yellow tones.
