Hey ladies
I've been having all sorts of nightmares with my hair recently (uneven base - but this is a story for another thread). Anyway, I finally went silver the other day and due to aforementioned uneven base it took completely differently over different parts of the hair, going from a light warm silver at the roots to a deep grey-purple at the ends.
So rather than panicking I put it in a bun for two days and then worked with what I had (I also didn't really want to use a colour remover since I'm pretty sure the base will now be green, which is not very work friendly!). I was once told by a hairdresser that what they knew as a bleach bath was literally that - bleach powder and clarifying shampoo, no developer. So I gave that a go on the uneven bits and it worked like MAGIC - seriously, stripped about two levels out of the hair and all the purple tone in five minutes. Since there was no developer, the only noticeable damage was a bit of dryness.
Now I don't know how various parameters may have affected this - it was a peroxide dye (with 10vol developer), it was very dark, it was within the first couple of days of it being on, etc. So YMMV - but potentially worth a go if you want to rapidly fade a dye while avoiding peroxide, and are leery of the unpredictable results of a colour remover.
How does bleach even work without peroxide?
No idea, but it doesn't lift, it just seems to give the shampoo some extra abrasive punch.
