Please help! Trying to get my hair silver!

Hey everyone!

I really want to have silver/grey hair, and I could really use some help getting there!
I’ve been trying to get silver hair for a while, but so far not with that much success.

This is after a failed trip to the salon where they gave me highlights instead of bleaching everything (which still looked okay).
And this is after they added some weird blue streaks (this was their idea of silver hair!). I was reeeally unhappy with this. I used color remover (which basically turned it back into the first picture) and then tried a few things myself, but nothing worked that well because my hair just wasn’t light enough.

So I soaked my hair in coconut oil for two hours and decided to bleach it! I started with my lower hair as it was darker, and then did the rest of my hair as well. Left it in for about an hour. And the result was this.

I really thought this was light enough to get silver hair! It's pretty much a banana peel yellow color all over, though slightly orange in some places, and pretty much white on the highlights! I had seen YouTube videos of people using Directions Silver toner and I decided to try that next, which brings me to my current hair color.

Which doesn't look bad, but on closer inspection:

I left the Directions Silver toner in for about two hours. Unfortunately that was both too long and too short! Some parts of my hair are now a pastel blue, some parts look white/silver (pretty much what I want) and some parts still look a bit yellow with a subtle green undertone. In most lighting it doesn't look as bad as it does in the last two pictures, but I am still not really happy with this.

How do I fix this short term? I don’t want to bleach my hair again for quite some time, as I can tell it did some damage despite the coconut oil, and I also do not know how to bleach around my highlights.

I still have enough Directions Silver toner. I also have Directions in Violet (to make my own toner) and I have Wella T18 toner. Should I just use a toner again? If so, which do I use? And do I apply it all over or just on the yellow/green parts? Please help! I don’t think this looks terrible but it's still not what I want, and I don’t really feel confident anymore 🙁

Some areas were too dark, which is why they haven't become silver. You need a really light base for light silvers, so the only long term solution is to go through your hair and spot bleach all the dark sections.
For now you can try a darker silver dye to even it all out. You could try diluted violet, but you will get silver on the yellow parts and lilac on the white parts (unless you can just apply to the yellow areas?) which could look pretty.

Thank you for the reply! I was already thinking that some places were still a bit too dark. (I really wish they hadn't given me highlights, it'd be so much easier to fix now ??? but oh well)

Since I'd like to stay away from bleach for a while I'd prefer to go with dye. I don't mind if it turns a dark silver/grey - I'd love that! Are there any (dark) silver dyes you would recommend? I've only heard of Pravana Vivids Silver and I'm not sure where I can get that since I'm in Europe. I'd prefer it to not be a metallic/blue silver (which is ironically how it kind of looks now, oops) but a 'clean' or slightly violet-silver.

i had the same problem with directions silver. even though i'm pretty evenly platinum, it still grabbed onto the drier parts of my hair & went blue in some places & a nice silver in others. this was helpful however as it shows me which areas i needed to apply the colour to first. doing the application in 2 parts without rinsing in between gave me pretty good even results. half an hour wrapped in plastic was too long for my "healthier" hair (went blue) so i left it for 10- 15 minutes with no plastic wrap then applied to the drier areas for 10 minutes (no wrap again) & rinsed off. i also found shampooing with a purple shampoo helps even out the colour a little. good luck! unfortunately it fades quickly. i have the pravana silver on order from ebay, we'll see how that goes!

For a really nice grey I suggest using wella 050 toner additive. It's supposed to be used with a toner but if you mix one part 050 with two parts 20 developer and leave it for about 20-30 minutes it will be a perfect grey. I suggest doing a test strip though so you know how long to leave it in
