Hi everyone,
I'm new here and came for help.

Natural colour:  dark brown with some grey due to age
Hair history:  box dying darkest brown for years

Last year, I decided to get my hair done professionally.  I asked for ombre (dark brown on top and medium ash brown on bottom).  She dyed the top and lightened and toned the bottom.  I ended up with dark brown on top and orange on the bottom.  I didn't love it, but lived with it.

The second time I went, I asked for lighter and ashier on the bottom and asked that the "roots" be longer.  She dyed the top and lightened what was lightened the first time.  The bottom turned out strawberry.  I hated it and asked for it to be fixed.  For half price, she lightened and toned the bottom again and I got a beautiful blonde.  With purple shampoo, it was perfect.

This time, I asked for the same thing, but I wanted to "roots" to be shorter and things to be more blended.  She dyed the top and used foils to lighten above what was blonde.  She warned me it would be warm again.  I pictured a nice fade from dark, to brassy, to blonde and figured it would be fine for fall.

It looks awful!  I have brown roots, ORANGE streaks throughout brown, and then brassy blonde fading to ashy blonde.  See pic.  I can't stand the orange patches next to my face.  Please disregard the obvious overused of purple shampoo.  You can see the purple on the bottom.

What can I do AT HOME to fix this?  I can't afford to see a professional again, and I'm not comfortable confronting my hairdresser.  She did warn me it would be warm so I feel responsible.

I can get the bottom less ashy by not using the purple shampoo to make that blend better.

What will happen if I cover it all with a demi permanant ash colour the same level of darkness as the orange? Will the blonde pic it up more than the orange?

Should I just cover the orange with dark brown and leave the blonde?

Other ideas?  You guys are the experts. I'm still learning the basics.  I don't really want to go back to all dark brown.

Please help me!

I'm glad you included a picture, and I feel your pain!  I had a similar problem with an ombre-ish pattern and hated the oranges that didn't quite ever change.

In my humble opinion, since your hair has gone through loads of processes lately, I'd say to stay clear of any box dyes completely for a good, long while.  One thing that seemed to help my oranges was the use of semi-permanent blue dyes (instead of purple).  Blue was a bit stronger in covering the orange because those two colours are opposite on the colour wheel.

So, "semi-permanent", something you don't mix but instead apply straight from the bottle, and it won't contain any damaging peroxides.  You'd have to apply it only to the orange areas, and I'd suggest make sure it is well-diluted with a conditioner to prevent it from becoming too blue!  I'd also say blend it in well with the dark above, if not starting right up at the root and working down to the end of the orange areas to make sure the blue-toning doesn't clash with the roots.

I'm wondering, couldn't the stylist have toned the orange a bit?  I'd have thought she'd have been able to do that before you left the salon...

Thanks so much for your reply.  She put toner in all over, but I have no idea what it was designed for.  Wouldn't orange require a different toner than blonde?  IDK...I have lots to learn.
I happen to have a blue Manic Panic.  I bought it after my second appointment when my hair was strawberry.  I didn't end up using it because she said she would fix it for half price.
I may also use a semi-permanant medium ash brown all over as I'm a bit intimidated by blue and we have family pictures next weekend.  Do you think that could work or will it just make more of a mess?  Does semi permamant (with no activators) really wash out in so many shampoos?

Yeah, if you have a lot of yellow in your hair you need a purple toner, for orange you're better off with a blue toner. However, you have to be careful. It could turn blue/green OR a muddy colour as it neutralizes the orange.

The problem with an ash brown is that it can give a greenish tint in the ashy blond parts. Although they say you can wash it out, never count on it. Some colours can be extremely sticky in their last fade.

I'm quite shocked how your hairstylist fixed this honestly. It looks messy, regardless of her warning.

A possibility but I don't know whether you have time for it is perhaps work with several semi's and create nice blends with those, making the orange less harsh.

Thanks for the info. She fixed it last time. I didn't say anything to her this time.

I spoke with my friend who recommended me her hair stylist. It looks like she specializes in fixing messes. I caved and begged her to help me even though I really shouldn't spend the money.  She agreed to see me on Friday, even though she isn't taking on any new clients.

I can't help but reflect on the fact that I'd be hundreds of dollars richer if I had just stuck with my $10 box dye from Wal-Mart.  My hair would also be healthier.

Thanks again for your replies. I'll keep your advice in mind for the future if/when I decide to take on ombre myself!
