I'm having a root problem. On my hair is:
Initially: Bleached then Pravana Red
2 Months ago: Pravana Magenta & Wild Orchid mix
1 Month ago: Bleached roots Magenta & Wild Orchid again.
1 Week ago: Magenta & Wild Orchid (didn't touch almost inch of regrowth)
I'm 32 and have lots of grey hair that grows in quickly. After two weeks you can see growth at my hairline and at a month it's almost to half an inch. I have dark brown hair naturally.
What is the best way to handle my roots? My hair is thin due to past medical related hair loss so I'm trying to be as gentle as possible even though it's a fantasy color. Will a bleach bath cover the grey or would I be better getting L'oreal hi-color Magenta? Realistically my roots would need to be done every 3 weeks. Would I be better dropping Pravana and just going with L'oreal?
I question the idea that your roots need to be done every 3 weeks. I mean, do roots really matter? No one thinks pink hair is real after all... I get that you want to hide your greys, but if your hair isn't too strong, the doing your roots every three weeks is a really bad idea, you will find it really hard to not over lap. The best thing I find, if I'm finding roots not to my liking at any time, is use a headband to cover my hair line and then sweep the rest back so the roots are hidden. But I actually quite like my roots now, though, I will add that I have very few grey hairs yet (I have no idea why not at 42!) so I can't truly relate and maybe I'd feel differently if that were the case.
The best way is to bleach when your roots are around 3/4 of an inch long. For most people thats about 5-6 weeks. If your hair is only 1/2 and inch at 6 weeks, then you can wait until about 2 months. That would be great for the rest of your hair too, it would give it plenty of time to recover. What most people don't realise is that even the fumes of the bleach causes a small degree of damage to the rest of the hair. I wouldn't go for the hi-colour myself, stick with the pravana. You wouldn't be able to drop the pravana anyway, permanent pinks fade badly and so you can't generally just do the roots, and then you'd have to still top up with pravana. Stick to bleach and pravana.
I don't think a bleach bath would be enough to lift your natural dark hair, so you're probably better off with a really good quality bleach, a low volume peroxide and pravana. Though I prefer Special Effects pinks myself π
Three weeks is my being right on top of it. Laziness normally bumps me closer to 5. Honestly I'm fine with pink and dark roots. My hairline, particularly at my forehead, is the most noticeable so as long as I have my hair down you can't really see the dark roots. They greys are what cause me to "Need" to do my roots. I have a cowlick, and that is the grey hairs favorite spot, so it really stands out. Of course there is the chance that I'm hyper-aware of it and it's not that bad. I've had grey hair since late 20's and it's always bothered me. It is also the reason I started dying my hair.
Thanks for the advice. I've heard good things about Special Effects, but never tried it, might have to cross over. Do they bleed pretty bad? I've had great luck with hardly any bleeding with my current mix. Would 10 volume developer get me anywhere or am I best off with 20 vol.?
Of course there is the chance that I'm hyper-aware of it and it's not that bad
That's almost certainly the case π We're always more worried about it and mostly other people hardly notice. And if they do... so what?
Special Effects can bleed, some quite badly. I've not used Special Effects pinks in a while because they're tricky to remove and I change colour often, so I can't remember which ones really bleed, other than Virgin Rose. The trick with any dye that bleeds is to dilute it with conditioner. If they're so highly pigmented that they bleed, then the colour won't change and, bonus, they last longer!
You might be fine with 10vol. You only need to get to ginger for a good pink. Any idea how quickly your hair lifts?
This will all be my 4th time bleaching and 2nd time just roots. Last time I did it by the time I was finished with my whole head (agains just roots) the first half and already gone orange. But that was with 30vol. So it was probably on for 10 mins max.
You'll should be ok with 10 then. You don't need it very light, light orange is fine.
