Ombre DIY after hairdresser failed

Hi everyone! I used to dye my hair a dark but vibrant red then covered it with a warm ash brown box dye. The red was box dye too. I went into a hairdresser as I wasn't sure what the outcome would be like if I used bleach to ombre my hair. I told her what was underneath my box dye ash brown and she said we'll manage with a 40 vol. at the end of it you could hardly see a difference but a shimmer of lighter brown. I had to go back.. $310.00 later it's a nasty orange! I bought hi-lift bleach and 30 vol developer and lifted it a bit more. It was still orange. Boy they're not wrong about taking red out!! So I googled what to do with 'orange' hair with some red tones. There was some good advice about using nice n easy 106 medium ash blonde. BOOM! It worked wonders I loovved it  *loveeyes* then it faded somewhat and I thought I'd put a toner in it for 5 mins called Schwarzkopf ex blonde toner. It completely stripped the nice n easy leaving me orange yet again!  I'm thinking of using the nice n easy again over the orange to get my colour I loved again. Or should I bleach a little longer? I'm very dark On top so I don't want to go overly blonde but not orange either. Should I have a crack at bleach before the colour again? What do you guys think? Thanks so much for your replies I really appreciate it!! X

Your poor hair.

40 vol is harsh.  Super harsh.  Hair-meltingly harsh.

You've then double processed it with another high volume peroxide and bleach and triple processed it with a permanent dye.  Quadrouple processed with the toner.  For future reference, bleaching and permanent dyes (including those marketed as "semi permanent" which have developer) should be used no less than one month apart.  It sounds like you've done this over the course of the weekend.  It should have been done over the course of four months.

Please, please do not use the Nice N Easy or bleach, as that will be a fifth process and your hair probably is very, very fragile.  It may not currently feel like it, because it can take up to a month to show.

Use a semi colour for the mean time, and hope your hair has enough cuticles left to hold on to it.  You'll want a very diluted blue/purple shade to neutralise any yellow/orange tones.  Buy some Joico K-Pak Reconstructor and use it once a week.  Avoid heat styling for the time being, as well.

I hope you're able to salvage some of your hair's integrity.  Your stylist should have told you that you wouldn't get the result you want immediately, and they also should have gone for colour removers before the bleach ... sadly, a lot of stylists are too happy to just reach for the 40 vol and not bother with managing their customer's expectations.  It's how a lot of our bleaching horror stories happened.

Thanks for your reply.. It's actually worse than that. She had me at the basin for about 15 mins each time with a toner on it too. This has all been done in a course of about 2 1/2 months.

My hair is in pretty good condition considering, I started to turn grey at a young age (gotta love genetics!) so I colour the roots as needed. I was afraid the brown would run through the ends when I rinsed it off so I got my advice online again and coated the ends with olive oil. I had the oil on for the time it took to process the colour.

I use NAK aromas shampoo and conditioner. I have very thick course dry hair and this works really well for my hair. I also use MUK intensive treatment (in a blur jar) and the NAK ends therapy.

You've convinced me not to get the bleach out again but to be honest I hate my hair orange and Ill need to use the nice n easy. I don't think the purple products will do much at this stage. I'll try to use the nice n easy every couple of months then I guess  ::)

Actually when you say semi colour with diluted purple/blue tones can you recommend any? I might give it a go. Sorry I miss understood and thought you meant a blue/purple base shampoo and conditioner.

I would give the blue/violet dye a go. It is totally non-damaging (as you are diluting with conditioner you can even use a masque type one and give your hair a deep condition at the same time) and you can adjust the strength to suit your hairs current colour. It really does work to neutralise brassy tones.
If your hair is more orange than yellow i would try something like Directions Neon blue or Special effects blue Velvet, both are purple based blues.

Thank you. But won't my hair turn green? It's a very vivid blue that's all :s

You start with the amount of conditioner you need and add the dye in tiny quantities until you get to the desired shade. It will be very diluted. White and silver toners sold for blonde hair are very dilute violet or blue, it is just cheaper and more convenient to make your own to suit your hair. If your hair is more yellow than orange you need a violet toner rather than blue.
