Need suggestions on what to do

Hello All,

I am a newbie to the forum, as well as, bleaching my hair. Can you help me please?  I need your suggestions on what methods, timing, etc., that I should use to achieve my goal of being a level 10, which I know won't happen overnight.

About my hair:

I've for the most part been dark headed, then went to the lighter colors of light brown, med blonde etc. and have had to dye my hair since age 14 due to being prematurely gray- which was just hit and miss on my hair. (I've always used box dyes). My hair upon starting isn't in the greatest condition (extremely dry) due to years of processing with permanent colors, and mainly from having thyroid disease which causes my hair to be extremely dry, and to shed hair like a dog anyway.  I've been using a lot of good quality products to help my hair before ever starting.

My plan is to completely bleach my hair platinum, and start wearing it a light gray/silver to blend with my roots, so I can stop coloring it, yet have it blended using toners, semi, demi colors, and purple shampoos, etc.  I'm in no hurry to be finished, although I will be glad when all the processing is completed, and my goal is achieved.  I am willing to take it slow, and have been doing so, in order to try to prevent any irreversible damage during the processes.

Here's what I've done so far:

Treatments, treatments, and more treatments have been used to hydrate, repair my already dry hair.

To remove my old color, I, of course, ended up having to use color remover twice on it, (I waited for a couple weeks between the 2 removers, and used treatments on my hair to help try to eliminate the dryness, and attempt to add as much moisture back into it as I could during this time).  Even after 2 removers being used especially the back of my hair was still fairly stained from the years of old box dye colors.  I used clarifying shampoos, dandruff, shampoo, Dawn dish liquid, etc. to shampoo it which did help remove the staining more, but not completely, mostly it just made it more dry. So more treatments to hydrate it again.

After waiting about 2 weeks or more after the 2nd color remover, again doing a lot of treatments afterwards to eliminate dryness, and add moisture, as well as running around all over town with that beautiful brassy hair color lol.

I then did a full 45 min bleaching on my hair using bleach, 40 volume developer, and also using both coconut oil, and Olaplex during the bleaching process to try to prevent extensive drying/damage during the process.  It lightened it wonderfully, (probably about 3-4 levels) with little to no damage, although still dry as usual.  Again I did tons of treatments, including an Olaplex stand alone treatment on it after the bleaching process, but unfortunately, the back is still darker than the front due to the box dye staining, so it needs to be
redone :(, and my hair is still dry as always.
My beautician and the ladies I know from Sally's all said it looks really good, and that the damage was minimal, if any at all. πŸ™‚

My husband hated the close to platinum blonde on my hair, which is not the color I plan to leave it anyway, but was just the color I have to get to in order to tone it the light silver/gray I want it to be.  But to appease him, and also to give my hair another rest between bleaching processes and do even more hydrating treatments on it,  I broke down, and put a lightest ash blonde toner on it.  The toner made it a really pretty color, but the back was darker than the front.

Currently the top and front, from like my ears forward are around a level 8-9, but there are areas that are a 10, but the back is around a level 7-8. (They are close in color, but the back still being slightly darker is fairly noticeable (especially to me), and IMO really needs to be lightened some more). The front I could live with if I had to, but the back is a different story.

Darker toners, demi or semi dyes would of course, hide the color differences between the front and back, but I'd like the back to be lighter so the front and back more closely match, and so I can use the lighter shade toners on my hair, and have it look the same.

So, it's been a couple weeks since my 1st bleaching with tons of hydrating treatments since then.  So it is again time to bleach, or do something to the back especially, to try to remove the remainder of the box dye staining, and I'd also like to lightly bleach over the front again to try to achieve at least an all over level 9, but preferably an all over level 10.

I will again be using coconut oil, and Olaplex during the bleaching process, and in order to accommodate the dilution of the Olaplex I will be using a 40 volume developer on the back, but may decrease the developer to a 30 volume in the front, unless you all tell me otherwise, which when using Olaplex actually dilutes the 40 volume to 30 volume, and the 30 volume to 20 volume.

My questions are:

1)  Should I do another full bleaching on my entire head, especially in the back?

a). Or do an extended bleach bath in the back, and a limited one in the front?
b). Or in the front should I try to lighten it to a full 10, possibly with just the developer, coconut oil, and
Olaplex Only without using bleach on it at all?
c). Or should I just do the back only, and leave the front alone for now, until I catch the back level up the
          front?

My biggest concern is that in the back if I do an extended bleach bath, and if it doesn't lighten it enough that I'll have to either repeat the bleach bath a couple more times, or then turn around and do a total bleaching process which would probably be as, or more harmful and drying on my hair then just doing an initial full bleaching again to begin with?  LOL or would it?

To be honest, I have no clue how to even do a bleach bath, as I've never done one before, or how many levels it is possible to raise my hair doing a bleach bath, instead of a full bleaching.

2). Can you please tell me the correct way to do a bleach bath, best shampoos to use, and how many levels is possible to lighten the hair with one?

3). Also approximately how much longer should I leave the bleach on the back of my hair to attempt to get it as light as the front? (My guess would be probably about 20 to 30 mins longer because that box dye staining is really stubborn back there).

a).How long should I leave the bleach, bleach bath, or developer on the front of my hair? (My guess is
probably about 10 -20 mins total?)

4). Also how will the toner that I now have in my hair change the effects of the bleaching process? (i.e. do I need to leave the bleach or developer on longer because it now has toner in it?)  I've heard that bleaching with toner on your hair will turn it yellow, is this true?  I plan to tone again after this process, and leave my hair alone for awhile with continued hydrating treatments on it, so it can rest and rejuvenate before doing anything else to it.

I think that about covers what's been going on with my hair, and the condition it is in, also what my final level goal is, and all the questions I have for now.  LOL I'm sure I'll have a dozen more in the future, but any suggestions, input, you all can give on these would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, it's nice to be a part of your forum.  Have a wonderful Day!!

I don't have all the answers for you unfortunately as my own hair bleaches very easily with just a bleach bath, however I just wanted to comment that you need to be careful with the 40 vol, it is not designed to be used near your scalp and can cause chemical burns!

(Also it is worth mentioning that there may be areas of your hair that have become stained from previous dyes and no amount of bleaching will remove it fully! Hopefully this won't be the case but it is something to bear in mind)

Thank you for the info lauralei13, it is appreciated.

Luckily, I had no issues with the 40 volume with the 1st bleaching, but I also didn't bleach my roots because they are already a really light grayish/white so I didn't see any reason to bleach them.  I will be careful with that if I use it again in the future.  The only reason I used the 40 volume to begin with was that I was also going to be using Olaplex with it, (if I hadn't been using Olaplex too I would have never even bought the 40 volume, I would have just used 30).  I was afraid that if I used the 30 volume with the Olaplex that it would dilute it too much, and either take forever to bleach my hair, or not give me an adequate enough lift at all.

Now that it has been lifted pretty well from the 1st bleaching, I may try to do the bleaching, or bleach bath, or whatever you all help me to decide to use, with the 30 volume, and the Olaplex, and see where that takes me.  Although using the 30 volume with the Olaplex may take a little longer, and the lift not be quite as much, if it keeps from burning my scalp off lol it will certainly be worth it. My main goal right now is to just have the back, match the front, which as you mentioned about the staining, may or may not be possible.  I suppose only additional processes, and time will tell on that.

Thank you again for the info, and have a wonderful day!!!

Yes, I'm not sure if the olaplex would stop it from being dangerous to your scalp, but I thought it better that you knew!  πŸ™‚

Like I say, my hair lifts very easily (I used to do a bleach bath with 10 vol and get light yellow!) but I think there are people on here who started darker and got really light with bleach baths. The key to a transition like this is patience and you are happy with the fact that it might take a little while so that's a good sign.

I think a full head of silver/ white can look so elegant, I'm trying to persuade my mum to abandon her blonde in favour of embracing her grey at the moment (although she saw my friend's faded aquamarine the other day and fell in love so god knows what she'll be asking me to do for her next time I visit!) good luck and I hope it all goes well, hope you have a wonderful day too!  ;D

Thank you lauralei.

The Olaplex, to my knowledge, does not protect the scalp from chemical burns, but certainly works wonders at preventing the bleach from frying my hair.  According to the directions because it dilutes the volume of the developer they tell you if you want a 30 volume lift that if using Olaplex you need to use a 40 volume developer to get it, and the same with a 20 volume lift, you have to get a 30 volume developer to achieve it when using Olaplex, so that's why I used the 40 volume.  I actually watched a Youtube video the other day, and a licensed beautician, who supposedly had been in the business for 25 years did a 30-40 min full bleaching on a client using 50 volume developer, and Olaplex.  Her response was something like, I'm not worried a bit about using the 50 volume developer that long on her hair because I have Olaplex. My thought was, as much as I appreciate the protection that Olaplex offers, and understand that it dilutes the developer volume, ain't nobody using 50 volume on my head ever, just incase they are wrong about that lol.

What good is protected, undamaged, hair if you don't have a scalp to hold the roots in? lol

I did break down the other night and tried a bleach bath on it. LOL I got chicken that I may not be doing it right, or something, and washed it out after about 10mins, but it did lighten it a little more in that length of time.  But I'll do another one in a week or so.

I agree with the silver/white being elegant (But only if it is the right silver/white).

I actually put a toner on mine after the bleach bath the other night, and it might be a color that might be right up your dear mum's alley lol.  I used Wella Color Charm T18 with 3 capfuls of Wella color charm 050 added to it, lol needless to say that is NOT a good color on me, or probably anyone else either.

Other people use them together at various ratios, and it looks good on them, but nope, not me.  It turned a light silver/grayish color, but has a lot of blue tone in it. Up close it looks pretty good, but in the sunlight, to me, it looks like a dull light powder blue color, and looks like someone dumped light blue baby powder on my head lol.  I'm hoping purple shampoos helps make the color better to get me through to the next bleach bath,  and a different ratio of the T18 and 050, or an entirely different toner color all together because what I have right now just ain't gunna cut it.  I did order some Fudge violet shampoo that arrived just today, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it helps.

Thanks again for the info, and lol at your dear little mum's choice of colors.  I wish mine was still around to do her hair because that was one of our things when she was here too. πŸ™‚  Have a wonderful night!!

The light blue powdery looking color I suspect may have been caused by the toner colors, my white hair, and some funky undertone brass all working together in there, or something, because shampooing my hair 2 really good times with purple shampoo and purple conditioner solved that issue, and now I'm all over a pretty silvery/gray, of course, except the back part with the box dye staining and that's more of a darker silvery/gray color.  This is certainly a much better color now, so I can live with this until it comes time to bleach bath the back again. I did another Olaplex stand alone treatment again today too,  just to try to help repair any damage that the processing has caused.  As of right now my hair looks, and feels really good because it's been getting a lot more TLC then it ever has before.

Oh hell no, I wouldn't go anywhere near my scalp with a 50 vol, olaplex or not! Glad you have achieved a colour closer to what you want, to be honest I wouldn't bother with the toners that you have to mix with developer, they cause damage every time you use them so it makes your hair more and more porous and then they fade faster and faster each time! You will be better off with silver or purple shampoos or diluted direct dyes!

Aw I miss not living close to my mum for things like that! My friend has dyed her hair denim blue today so my mum will probably be after that colour once she sees it!

LOL lauralei13, that's pretty much what I thought too.  I thought the 50 volume even with the Olaplex was rather insane, and her nonchalant attitude of I'm not worried a bit about using the 50 volume developer that long on her hair because I have Olaplex was very careless, and foolish on her part. I think she's putting way too much faith in a mere product, and it will eventually come back to bite her, but sadly, at the cost of some severe damage, or complete loss of her client's hair.

As far as the toners, I also have Manic Panic and Makki both here too that I can use instead, and not have to use the developers with either of them.  Is there an actual Silver colored Shampoo?  The Silver shampoos that I have bought have all just been like my regular purple shampoo. I'd love to find one that had the actual gray/silver tones it,  but then it probably wouldn't hide the brass.

Yeah, it's really tough when our moms aren't close by, and even tougher when you can't pick up the phone and hear her voice.  LOL on mum possibly wanting to jump on the denim blue color wagon, although I bet it's a pretty color. πŸ™‚

Thanks for everything, and have a wonderful night.

I have seen some crazily nonchalent attitudes to other people's hair from 'professionals' (some of the forums for professional stylists are pretty terrifying when you read the threads about how they save time by taking risks with people's hair!) I'm sure that for the most part professional stylists are very responsible, but like most professions there are some who aren't quite as considerate!

I'm assuming from your spelling of certain words and your timing on here that you are in the US? I'm not sure what types of purple/ silver shampoo you can get there, but here there are shampoos marketed as silver (but the one's I'm familiar at least seem to just be violet anyway as they work by toning the yellow out of your hair). There are direct dyes that can be diluted to give a silver or grey look though!

Yes I have to say, living far away from my mum has made me appreciate the time I do get with her a lot more and not take her for granted!

You're very welcome! Hope you are having a good weekend

Yes Lauralei, you are correct that I am from the US, and right now I'm feeling stupid, stupid, stupid lol.
I am again in need of advice as my hair currently looks horrible.

I tried the Makki Professional hair color mask in gray, mixed in with conditioner as planned, and it turned my hair again the lovely shade of light powder blue within just a few mins of having it on my hair. (So I at that time planned on staying away from all toners for  a good long time). Luckily, I was able to get the blue out relatively easy by doing a couple of clarifying shampoos, and my hair looked beautiful at that time, the platinum blonde was gorgeous, so I thought thank goodness finally it is at a decent color that I can certainly live with.

I decided that I was just going to do a good moisturizing treatment on it because it was pretty dry from the clarifying shampoo, and then just use the purple shampoo as needed for the brass which it didn't need at that time.  Then I was going to just let it rest.  Well, lol that hasn't happened yet, apparently there is no rest for the wicked.

The moisturizer treatment I chose (after researching which ones would be the best for dry damaged hair) was a few drops of castor oil mixed in with virgin olive oil.  I generously put it in my hair, and left it a good long while to be sure I was good and moisturized since I wouldn't be putting anything else in my hair for quite some time.

I rinsed, and shampooed my hair and it felt wonderful, the best it has felt since the processing began.  I towel dried it, and then looked in the mirror to find a lovely head full of OLIVE GREEN hair (I literally could have sat down and cried).  (I had no clue it would do that until I was reading the last of several articles while the stuff was on my head that said you should do a test strip if you have platinum blonde hair to make sure the olive oil doesn't turn your hair green. Off the bathroom I ran to rinse my hair, but unfortunately, it was already too late.  LOL I sure wish that little useful FYI had been in the 1st article I read, instead of the last.  (I'm now anxiously awaiting the blondes have more fun period of this because so far it has been anything but fun).

So, needless to say, I've again been having to use clarifying shampoo, Dawn dishwashing liquid, and chelating it with lemon juice and conditioner in order to try to remove the green. (although it's came out a lot, and is close to back to normal in the front and on the sides, it's still pretty dark in the back, but has faded to a more Goldy green (lol or maybe its a Moldy green instead) of the really dark olive green, so I'm making some progress. (When I did that moisturizing treatment I wanted to do a really good job so I really loaded the back up good because it was drier than the front was, and lol I even combed it all through to make sure I got every hair).  I guess I could kind of look on the bright side, this is the 1st official color to remain in my hair longer than a couple of shampoos, so my hair must be doing better at holding tone lol, and also it covered up the box dye staining for now too.

I know they say red cancels out green, but as porous as my hair is there is no telling what color I'd end up with if I were to apply red to my hair for even a few mins, plus I've read that it also will leave your hair darker?  Do you have any suggestions on what I can do, that I'm not already doing in order to get the rest of this green out of my hair, so I can finally just leave it alone?  I've been keeping it well conditioned while doing the clarifying, and chelating on it, so it doesn't get drier and more damaged then it already is, but all the shampooing has caused some breakage, and of course it is taking it's toll on my hair.  I so hated this happening because my hair really just needed a break from processing or anything, and for me to put lots of moisture back in it.

I also went and invested in all completely white hair products to help moisturize my hair, and decided to not even use the ones I already had that had a light pale yellow tint in them (especially for deep extended conditioning)because I know that light pale yellow color will probably also transfer to my hair.

I'm now in search of another good moisturizing oil that is clear or white in color, right now all I have is my bottle of castor oil (which has a darker yellow tint to it, so I won't be using it right now, but I bought some white leave in conditioning cream that has it in it, and I also have my Coconut oil which I will continue to use, but I know it isn't the greatest for moisturizing, and there are a lot better oils out there that will work better at helping to heal my hair, but are any of them close to clear, or white.    Do you have any suggestions on an oil or Moisturizing products in general, that I can use that will moisturize, yet not discolor my hair if I wanted to leave it on overnight?  Like I said before, being blonde is all new to me, and so far I'm making one heck of a mess out of it.

Thanks again for you help, and have a wonderful night.

I'm sorry, I haven't read most of your posts, I haven't had much time recently so reading long posts hasn't been possible. I've read the last one though.

I actually suspected once olive oil had stained my hair, but I was told it wasn't possible, so I'm sort of glad I'm not the only one it's happened to!

That said, pink is actually best to tone faded green. You'll want to mix in a teeny bit of purple as it's olive toned and that'll work on the yellow. The best way is to add a tiny bit of a pinky purple mix (you can invert the colours on a photo to see what colour it needs to be) into conditioner. Go paler than you think it should be. As your hair is being grabby it might be enough. If it's not, add a little more. And repeat until it's right.

For oil, try argon oil maybe? I'm always a little sceptical on the oil thing. I don't really believe they do as much as people say. I think they're useful, but mostly for preventing moisture loss because they make a barrier. I might be wrong though πŸ™‚

Thank you Janineb, I'm sorry about the long posts, I've been doing a lot of stupid things lately.

Olive oil staining, or at least olive oil heavily penetrating your hair to the point it remains in there is apparently very possible, and I've currently got the green hair to prove it. I don't think it's stained my hair the way say the box dye has stained it, and I don't think the green is permanent, it's just a really ugly color and in there deep.  I do think it will wash out in time (Or lol at least I hope it will).  I think this happened because I coated my hair so heavily, instead of just lightly coating it, then combed it through, and left it on for an extended period of time, and now it's penetrated so far into my dry porous hair that it is difficult to get it to come back out at the moment.

From what I've seen so far, I think if a person's hair is light enough, and porous enough, it's capable of picking up any darker or equally colored tone that it may come into contact with be it from oils, masks, or anything else.  That's one of the reasons I'm now staying away from any products that have any color to them at all, even if it is very light color like pale yellow because I'm pretty sure if they remain in my hair for even 5 mins it will change the tone of my hair. I don't think doing a quick on the hair,  and rinsing it right back off the hair within a min or 2, even with the olive oil would have caused this issue at all, but I think leaving it on as long as I did, combing it through to penetrate the roots etc. is what caused my current problem. But lol, I could be completely wrong, but after I get this green gone from my hair, I'm not taking anymore chances with any tones attaching to my hair, so it's clear or white from here on out.

Thanks again for the info, I'll try to mix up some conditioner with something to make it light pinky purple as you suggested and see what happens.  Is there any product you suggest to use for this?  I have some Ardell red gold color corrector drops that mix up to a light pink, to a dark purple depending on how many drops I use in my conditioner, do you think those will work, or should I get something like Directions, or manic panic and use that instead (I also have some Violet purple manic panic here too if that would be better than the Ardell drops).  Have a wonderful day!!!

I don't think oil moisturises either, it's for sealing moisture in / preventing loss of moisture.

I use coconut oil on damp hair (after washing/conditioning) by melting some on my fingertips and stroking through.

Same with skin tbh, I have very dry hands at the moment and I find I get much better results by using a moisturiser, letting it seep in, then adding a little oil on top to lock it in.
The oil on its own would just give me dry, oily skin.

Thanks Kitebunny for the info.  I agree.

Coconut oil is one of my favorites, and I agree it has little to no moisturizing abilities from what I've read, so a moisturizer underneath is a must. Coconut oil, however, once it has dried, causes my hands to feel very soft, yet very dry after applying it to my hair, so I suspect the same is probably occurring in my hair also. I know there are quite a few people who complain that coconut oil causes their hair to shed/fall out really bad.  I've not found that to be an issue in my case (I don't think so anyway), but with my thyroid disease and frequent shedding anyway it's kind of hard to tell if it is the disease or the products causing the shedding.  I will for sure continue to use a moisturizer underneath the coconut oil.  Are there any particular brands that you have found that works better than others?

For products to make your own toner, I'm talking about direct dyes. Manic Panic etc.

Osmo do a good moisturising deep conditioner.

Thank you Janineb,

I know no toner will stay long in my hair even if I add too much, and it does tone it, lol that is unless it's olive green.  But in your opinion of the direct dyes which ones do you think works the best at staying in a person's hair?  I know when I picked up the Manic Panic the girl at the shop said she had used it but really didn't care for it because it didn't stay in her hair for long at all, so I'm wondering f perhaps Directions or some others would work better.

Thanks again for all your help.  Have a wonderful night.
